Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary at Lake ForestIn late May 2026, the sweeping oceanfront gardens of the Caruso Estate in Lake Forest were bathed in the brilliant golden glow of late spring.
The dark, predatory shadow of midnight returns, forged debts, and silent tears was permanently, historically erased from their lives.
Over three hundred prominent community leaders, supreme court justices, Dr. Alexander Reed, Marcus Vance, and close friends gathered around white-linen tables set up along the stone patio, enjoying fine food, vintage wine, and live acoustic music.
Maren stood near the grand marble balustrade wearing a breathtaking floor-length ivory silk dress that caught the soft Atlantic breeze. She was three months pregnant, a subtle, radiant glow illuminating her beautiful face as her hands rested gently over her belly.
Dante Caruso walked out onto the stone terrace wearing an immaculate dark suit, holding two glasses of sunlit cider, stepping up beside his wife near the balustrade.
He wrapped his broad, warm arm around her waist, pulling her back flush against his solid frame, leaning down to press a sweet, lingering kiss against her temple, his hand resting gently over hers against her stomach.
"What are you thinking about, my queen?" Dante whispered softly into Maren's ear.
Maren looked out over the vast, sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan stretching before us into the unbroken horizon, leaning her head comfortably back against his broad chest.
"I was thinking about ten-forty-three P.M., Dante," she answered softly, a radiant, beautiful smile lighting up her face. "And how coming home early brought us straight to our true home."

Dante offered a soft, breathtaking smile—a look of pure, eternal love that lit up his severe, handsome features.
"I came home late for a year, Maren," Dante promised, his deep baritone thick with emotion, pulling her and their unborn child closer under the spring sun. "And I will spend the rest of my life making sure I never leave your side again."
