Chapter 5 - Fire at Block C-12The lower Manhattan storage yard was a labyrinth of towering corrugated metal shipping containers stacked four high under the pale glare of amber floodlights. The damp coastal air was thick with the smell of burning rubber, diesel smoke, and wet asphalt.

Dominic’s black SUV screeched to a halt near container block C-12. Silas and eight elite enforcers poured out of the vehicles instantly, their assault rifles raised, fanning out into the shadows between the massive steel walls.
"They’re barricaded inside the central bay," Silas reported over the tactical comms channel, jogging up to Dominic’s side. "They’ve poured accelerant across the floor. If we don't breach in two minutes, the whole block goes up."
Dominic nodded, pulling a suppressed tactical carbine from the trunk of his vehicle. He checked the chamber with a smooth, practiced motion. He looked back at Amelia, who stood beside him, her jacket zipped tight against the cold river wind, holding a heavy metal flashlight.
"Stay behind the secondary reinforcement pillar," Dominic instructed.
"I'm right behind you," Amelia replied, her grip on the flashlight steady.
"Move in!" Dominic barked.
The enforcers surged forward. Silas kicked open the heavy corrugated side door of bay C-12 with a deafening crash.
Clack-clack-bang!
Automatic gunfire erupted from the darkness inside the container bay. Sparks showered down like fireworks as bullets ricocheted off the steel walls, chewing up concrete and metal. Dominic and his men returned fire with surgical precision, suppressing the mercenary positions inside with disciplined, rhythmic bursts.
"Clear the left flank!" Dominic shouted, advancing through the smoke with absolute, terrifying calm.
Amelia stayed right on his six, sweeping her flashlight beam across the dark corners of the bay, illuminating hidden pathways and warning the enforcers of flanking movements before the mercenaries could reposition. Her tactical awareness—honed by years of living on the run with a paranoid cryptographer father—made her as effective as any trained scout.
"Two men moving toward the rear service hatch!" Amelia yelled over the gunfire, sweeping her light toward the back wall.
Silas pivoted instantly, firing two rapid shots that dropped the fleeing mercenaries before they could reach the exit.
In less than three minutes, the firefight was over. The remaining mercenaries dropped their weapons and surrendered as Dominic’s enforcers swarmed the interior, kicking away weapons and slapping heavy zip-ties onto their wrists.
Dominic walked quickly to the far end of the bay where a heavy fire-resistant safe was bolted to the concrete floor. The digital keypad had been smashed with a hammer, and smoke was billowing from its cracked seams.
"The records," Dominic muttered, kneeling down.
Amelia rushed forward, dropping to her knees beside him. She grabbed a heavy-duty fire extinguisher from the wall bracket, pulled the pin, and blasted the smoking interior of the safe with chemical foam, instantly choking out the internal fire before it could consume the contents.
With trembling hands, Dominic reached inside the smoldering metal box and pulled out a heavy, water-damaged metal briefcase embossed with the seal of the European Science and Security Council.
He handed it to Amelia.
She popped the rusted latches. Inside, protected by heavy silicone seals, were dozens of leather-bound notebooks, handwritten cryptographic keys, and a thick stack of personal photographs documenting her father’s life's work—and his final, desperate warnings about the criminal syndicate that hunted him.

Amelia pulled one of the photographs out. It was a picture of her father smiling on a sunny beach in Greece, holding a ten-year-old Amelia on his shoulders. Written on the back in his familiar, elegant handwriting were the words: Truth cannot be burned.
A single tear cut a clean path down her soot-stained cheek, but a profound, overwhelming sense of peace settled over her chest. The ghosts of her past had finally been laid to rest.
