Chapter 5 - The Westchester SiegeThe bullet-resistant black SUV tore through the midnight rain on the Taconic State Parkway, its headlights cutting through the blinding downpour like twin lasers.

Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was thick enough to choke on. Salvatore drove with reckless, professional precision, while Adrienne sat in the back beside Simone, his hand resting near the Sig Sauer P226 tucked into his belt.

Simone stared out the window at the blurred streaks of amber streetlights. Her apartment was destroyed. Her life—the neat, safe, orderly life she had built over five years—had been ripped apart in twenty minutes because she happened to be the secretary of a mafia boss.

"I'm sorry," Simone whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the engine and the drumming rain against the roof.

Adrienne turned his head, his dark eyes fixing on her in the dim dashboard glow. "For what?"

"For getting dragged into your world," she said bitterly. "For being naive enough to think I could keep a professional boundary from the monsters in your industry."

Adrienne reached out, his large, warm hand closing firmly over her cold fingers. He didn't let go, despite her reflexive attempt to pull away.

"You didn't get dragged into my world, Simone," Adrienne said, his voice rough and stripped of all its corporate armor. "I dragged you into mine. From the day you walked into my office with that secondhand leather portfolio, I surrounded you with my shadows because I couldn't bear the thought of operating without you."

Simone looked at him, her heart hammering against her ribs. "You never told me that."

"I didn't know how," he confessed, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. "Men like me don't know how to say ‘I need you’ without making it sound like a threat. So I called you my secretary. I hid behind your schedule, your competence, your efficiency, because as long as you were working for me, I didn't have to admit that you were the only thing keeping me human."

Before Simone could process the confession, the SUV swerved violently to the left.

"Boss!" Salvatore yelled from the front seat, his hand slamming onto the steering wheel as he wrestled the vehicle around a sharp mountain bend. "We got company! Two black sedans on our tail, lights off!"

Adrienne’s hand dropped Simone’s fingers. In a split second, the vulnerability vanished, replaced by cold, calculating tactical brilliance. He reached down, grabbed a secure tactical radio, and popped open the glove box to pull out an extra magazine.

"Veretti hit squad," Adrienne muttered, his eyes narrowing as he checked his side mirror. "They tracked the vehicle's satellite ping. Salvatore, take the service exit toward the lower gate of the estate. Don't go to the main house."

"Copy that!"

The SUV fishtailed onto a gravel access road, tires screaming against the mud as they tore through the wrought-iron gates of the Westchester estate. Massive oak trees loomed on either side, their dark branches whipping against the windows in the storm.

Suddenly, a deafening crack echoed through the night.

A bullet pierced the rear windshield, shattering the glass into a spiderweb of cracks right above Simone’s head.

"Get down!" Adrienne roared.

He lunged across the leather seat, throwing his body over hers, shielding her with his broad shoulders as another volley of automatic gunfire slammed into the side panel of the SUV. The vehicle jolted, sparks flying as the rear tire blew out, sending them spinning into a muddy embankment near the edge of the estate's private lake.

The SUV came to a violent, jarring halt against the trunk of a massive weeping willow.

Damp air, smoke, and the smell of burning rubber filled the cabin.

"Simone," Adrienne breathed out, his face inches from hers as he pulled himself up, his eyes scanning her frantically for blood. "Are you hit?"

"No," she gasped, her hands gripping the lapels of his jacket. "No, I'm okay."

Adrienne kicked open the deformed passenger door, stepping out into the pouring rain with his pistol raised. "Salvatore, cover the perimeter! Flush them out!"

The war had arrived at his doorstep. And Adrienne Romano was about to show the Verettis what it cost to touch what was his.
