Chapter 3 - The Weight of the LedgerBy 3:00 PM, the storm at the docks had been forcibly silenced, but the psychological tempests inside Romano Holdings were only growing more violent.

Simone sat at her desk outside Adrienne’s office, her fingers moving across her keyboard with machine-like speed, though her mind was miles away. The phone on her desk buzzed softly. She picked it up.

"Carter," she answered crisply.

“Simone.”

The deep, resonant voice sent a familiar, unwanted shiver down her spine.

“Come into my office.”

The line went dead before she could reply.

Simone took a steadying breath, locked her computer screen, and stood up. She smoothed the skirt of her navy pantsuit, grabbed a fresh notepad, and pushed open the mahogany doors.

Adrienne was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out at the gray, rain-drenched skyline of Manhattan. His suit jacket was off, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, corded muscle beneath—and the pale, jagged scar across his left wrist, a souvenir from a turf war a decade ago that he never spoke about.

He didn't turn around as she approached.

"The port authority commissioner accepted our amended manifest," Simone reported, her voice professional and detached. "The Palermo shipment is cleared. Marcus is currently downstairs with Salvatore, explaining why he endangered a twelve-million-dollar import line."

Adrienne turned slowly. His stormy dark eyes swept over her, taking in every detail of her composed posture.

"You didn't flinch," Adrienne said quietly. "When Salvatore walked in and dropped a syndicate crisis onto the desk, you didn't blink. You didn't ask questions about what kind of shipments we run out of Palermo. You just executed the clean-up."

"I have handled your logistics for five years, Mr. Romano," she reminded him, her chin lifting slightly. "I know what kind of empire I work for. I choose to look at the spreadsheets, not the shadows."

"And yet," Adrienne murmured, taking a slow step toward her, "you're standing here looking at me like I'm a stranger."

"Because you are," Simone snapped, the professional armor finally cracking under the immense pressure of the past forty-eight hours.

Adrienne stopped dead in his tracks. The raw, unfiltered honesty in her voice hit him harder than any bullet ever could.

"For five years," Simone continued, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion, "I have memorized your schedule, your preferences, your moods, your warnings, and your enemies. I have spent my youth managing your life while you lived it. But when I turned thirty last Wednesday—when I sat at my desk for eleven hours while you were twenty feet away—you didn't even know. You didn't ask. You didn't care."

Adrienne’s breath caught in his throat. He took another step forward, but Simone raised her hand, stopping him instantly.

"Don't," she whispered. "Don't look at me like you're realizing I'm valuable now. That's the problem, Adrienne. You only value what serves your empire. You only notice what threatens your control."

Before Adrienne could find his voice—before he could tell her about the gold ribbon he had found by her keyboard, about the desperate realization that had been eating at his soul since Saturday night—the internal intercom on her desk buzzed shrilly.

Simone turned sharply, walking back to her workstation, her composure instantly reassembled like a suit of armor. She pressed the speakerphone.

"Yes?"

“Miss Carter,” a shaky voice came through the line—it was reception desk security. “There’s a gentleman downstairs insisting on seeing Mr. Romano immediately. He says his name is Daniel Hayes. He claims it’s an emergency regarding... regarding personal safety.”

Simone’s face drained of color.

Across the room, Adrienne heard the name. The temperature in the executive office dropped to absolute zero.

A dark, lethal shadow crossed Adrienne’s face as he stepped past Simone, his hand resting on the receiver. "Send him up," Adrienne commanded, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register. "Let's see what emergency brings Mr. Hayes into a mafia boss's stronghold."
