Chapter 7 - The Crown of the EmpireA year later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was transformed into a breathtaking sea of white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and soft orchestral music.

It wasn't a corporate summit. It wasn’t a syndicate truce meeting.

It was the christening and first birthday celebration of Lily and Rose Sterling-Vance—an event that brought together the most powerful political figures, legitimate corporate magnates, and influential leaders in the city, all gathered to pay their respects to the new matriarchs of the eastern seaboard.

I stood before the tall arched mirrors in the private bridal suite, adjusting the cuffs of my bespoke ivory silk gown. My reflection showed a woman transformed: gone was the terrified, bruised tenement wife running for her life in the snow. In her place stood a queen—poised, powerful, wealthy, and completely unbreakable.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Elias stepped into the room.

He wore a tailored black tuxedo that accentuated his commanding stature, looking every bit the ruthless underworld king he had always been. But when his dark eyes locked onto me in the mirror, all the ice in his expression melted away.

He walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder.

“The guests are all waiting downstairs,” Elias murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck. “The mayor is talking sports with the chief of police, and your daughters have already managed to terrorize three corporate lawyers with their teething biscuits.”

I laughed, leaning back against his chest. “Good. It builds character for the boardroom.”

Elias turned me around gently in his arms, his hands resting securely on my hips. He looked down into my eyes, a rare, profound emotion shining in his gaze.

“One year ago today, I found you freezing under a dirty bridge,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense register. “I thought I was just saving a stranger.”

“And instead?” I asked, smiling softly.

“Instead,” Elias whispered, “you gave a cold, merciless monster a reason to build a home. You are the heart of this entire empire, Ava. Never forget that.”

I reached up, wrapping my arms around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed away every lingering ghost of the past.

When we finally walked out of the suite together, hand in hand, descending the grand staircase into the glittering sea of flashing lights and applauding faces, I didn't flinch. I didn't look down.

My daughters were safe, laughing in their frilly white dresses as they were carried by Tony and our trusted staff. My past was buried miles deep where it belonged. And the man walking beside me held the entire city in the palm of his hand—while holding my heart safely in his.

The freezing overpass was a lifetime away.

We had survived the night, claimed the crown, and built a kingdom that nothing in this world could ever tear down.
