Chapter 6 - The Unbroken ShieldTwo months later, the chaotic storm of winter had melted away, replaced by the bright, blooming sunlight of a New York spring.

The fallout in the underworld had been catastrophic for our enemies. Armed with the comprehensive financial and operational ledgers Victor had surrendered in exchange for a federal witness protection plea deal—which Elias had ensured landed him in a maximum-security cell anyway—federal authorities and Elias’s syndicates dismantled the Moretti network across the entire Northeast corridor in a single coordinated sweep.
The properties, shipping lanes, and legitimate corporate assets rightfully tied to my family’s ancient bloodline were successfully unfrozen and transferred into an independent trust fund bearing my name, completely securing the future of my daughters.
And the penthouse? It had long since stopped feeling like a gilded cage or a temporary shelter.
It had become home.
I sat on the expansive sun terrace overlooking Central Park, watching Lily and Rose—now plump, giggling, healthy babies—babbled happily as they played on a plush velvet blanket.
Footsteps approached softly behind me.
A heavy, warm wool jacket draped gently over my shoulders. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
Elias pulled up a chair beside mine, sitting down and watching the twins with a soft, genuine smile that the rest of the world would never be permitted to see.
“You’re working too late on those trust allocations again,” Elias gently teased, gesturing to the iPad resting on my lap.
“I’m just reviewing the pediatric cardiac wing endowment we’re funding at Mount Sinai hospital,” I smiled, locking the screen and setting it aside. “I want to make sure every single mother in crisis has a place to turn when the world locks its doors.”
Elias reached across the small gap between our chairs, taking my hand in his. His fingers intertwined securely with mine, warm and unyielding.
“You’ve built an empire of your own out of the ashes, Ava,” he murmured, his gray eyes holding mine with deep, unwavering devotion.
“We built it,” I corrected softly, squeezing his hand. “Together.”
He leaned closer, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss to my forehead.

When Elias found us beneath that freezing overpass months ago, I had believed our story was ending in the dark. I was half-dead, bleeding, and stripped of everything. But in the arms of the most feared mafia boss in New York, I had discovered an unbreakable shield, a fierce, unconditional love, and a kingdom built to last an eternity.
The storm was gone forever. And we were finally, truly safe.
