Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary at Lake ForestIn late May 2026, on a clear, warm Saturday afternoon, the sweeping oceanfront gardens of my renovated Lake Forest estate were bathed in the brilliant golden glow of late spring.

The dark, predatory shadow of locked bathroom doors, cold concrete floors, and six years of quiet fear was permanently, historically erased from our lives.
Over three hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, Bridget Colton, Marcus Vance, Dispatcher Caroline, and close friends gathered around white-linen tables set up along the stone patio, enjoying fine food, vintage wine, and live acoustic music.
I stood near the grand marble balustrade wearing a breathtaking floor-length ivory silk dress that caught the soft breeze coming off Lake Michigan. My dark hair fell in glossy waves over my shoulders, my face glowing with absolute victory, inner peace, and sovereign grace.
In a sunlit wooden pram beside me, six-month-old Maya cooed happily, kicking her small legs in a white lace dress.
Marcus Vance walked out onto the stone terrace wearing an immaculate dark tuxedo, holding two glasses of sunlit cider, stepping up beside me near the balustrade.
He wrapped his broad, warm arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his solid frame, leaning down to press a sweet, lingering kiss against my temple, his hand resting over mine on Maya's pram.
"Look at this sanctuary, Natalie," Marcus whispered softly into my ear, his deep baritone thick with emotion.

I looked out over the vast, sparkling blue waters of Lake Michigan stretching before us into the unbroken horizon, leaning my head comfortably back against his broad chest.
"I didn't build it out of anger, Marcus," I answered softly, a radiant, beautiful smile lighting up my face. "I built it because my daughter deserved a mother who walked in unbroken light."
