Chapter 4 - The Trial of Russell BennettThree months later, the grand marble courtroom of the Cook County Circuit Court in downtown Chicago was packed to absolute capacity for the criminal trial of State of Illinois v. Russell Bennett.

Russell sat at the defense table wearing an orange correctional jumpsuit, his dark hair disheveled, his face gaunt, hollowed out by ninety days of pre-trial detention. His arrogant, untouchable corporate demeanor was completely destroyed.
I sat in the front row of the gallery beside Bridget Colton and Prosecutor Marcus Vance.
When Judge Margaret Vance called for final victim impact statements, I stood up calmly, walked to the witness podium, and adjusted the microphone.
Russell looked at me with frantic, groveling eyes, mouthing Natalie... please... through chapped lips.
"For six years," I testified, my clear, velvet voice echoing cleanly off the marble walls, "Russell Bennett used isolation, locked doors, and financial control to make me believe I was helpless. On the night my daughter was born, he locked a mother and her newborn baby in a dark bathroom because his pride mattered more than our lives."
I turned my head, looking directly into Russell's bloodshot eyes.
"He thought no one was listening," I stated softly. "He forgot that truth always finds a microphone."
Judge Vance slammed her heavy wooden gavel flat against the sound block with a sharp, echoing THWACK.
The sentence was absolute and unyielding:
RUSSELL BENNETT: Convicted on all counts of Aggravated Domestic Battery, Unlawful Restraint, and Felony Embezzlement. Sentenced to twenty-four years in a state maximum-security facility without the possibility of early parole.

FULL DISSOLUTION: Full legal divorce granted, with absolute sole custody of Maya Bennett awarded to me, and all surname rights restored to The Natalie Bennett Heritage Trust.
Russell wept hysterical, pathetic tears as officers dragged him down the central aisle toward the holding cells below, screaming my name until the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him.
