Chapter 6 - The Final ReckoningThe climax arrived quietly, away from the glittering lights of the ballroom, out on the private outdoor terrace overlooking the dark, churning waters of Lake Michigan.

The gala was still in full swing inside, but the chill of the lake air provided a welcome escape. I stood by the stone balustrade, watching the distant lights of the city skyline reflect off the black water.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel behind me.
"Emily."
I turned. Tyler stood near the terrace exit, looking frantic and desperate. His expensive tuxedo was slightly rumpled, his hair unkempt, and the arrogant swagger that had defined him at the restaurant was entirely gone.
"What do you want, Tyler?" I asked, my voice completely steady.
He took a step forward, his expression a pathetic mix of pleading and anger. "Emily, please. You have to listen to me. This... this lunatic you're with, he's dangerous! He's using you to make a statement against his business rivals. You don't know what world you've stepped into. Come back with me. We can fix this, we can—"
"Fix what, Tyler?" I interrupted, cutting him off cleanly. "Fix the years you spent convincing me I was worthless? Fix the way you paraded your new life in front of me just to watch me bleed?"
"I was just joking around!" he stammered, his mask slipping entirely. "You know how it is! You're a big girl, Emily, you couldn't honestly expect—"
"Shut your mouth."
The voice cut through the terrace air like a sheet of ice.
Vincent stepped out from the shadow of the doorway, his coat buttoned, his eyes flashing with a cold, lethal fury. He walked straight toward Tyler, who instinctively shrank back until his spine hit the stone wall of the terrace.
"You don't get to speak to her ever again," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Your company is liquidated. Your fiancé left you an hour ago after realizing your bank accounts were frozen. And if you ever come within five miles of Emily again, I won't just ruin your business—I will erase you from this city entirely."
Tyler swallowed hard, terror choking off any further words. He gave one panicked look between Vincent and me, then turned and bolted back inside the ballroom, disappearing into the crowd like a coward.
I let out a long, shuddering breath I hadn't realized I was holding. The phantom weight that had crushed my chest for three years finally evaporated into the lake wind.
Vincent turned to me, the harshness melting from his face instantly as he stepped close, resting his hands gently on my waist.

"Are you alright?" he asked softly.
"I've never been better," I whispered, looking up into his dark, steady eyes.
