Chapter 4 - The Art of the RevealThree days passed in a blur of security protocols, legal briefings, and quiet conversations with Vincent across his mahogany dining table. I hadn't returned to my apartment, but Vincent had ensured my mother was safely relocated to a private, luxury recovery suite with round-the-clock medical care for her chronic arthritis. For the first time in my life, I didn't have to worry about whether next month's rent would clear.

Yet, an underlying tension hummed through the townhouse.
On Thursday afternoon, a team of stylists arrived carrying garment bags bearing labels I only ever saw in magazines.
"Mr. DeLuca’s instructions," a brisk, professional woman announced, gesturing to racks of emerald velvet, deep navy silk, and tailored cuts designed to celebrate, not hide, my curves. "Tonight, you are attending the annual Chicago Metropolitan Gala at the Navy Pier. And you will be walking in on Vincent’s arm."
Panic flared in my chest. "I can't go to a gala. I don't belong in a room full of billionaires and syndicate bosses. Everyone will stare at me. They'll compare me to Tyler's fiancé, to the socialites—"
"They will stare," a voice interrupted from the doorway, "because they have never seen a real woman walk into that room."
Vincent stepped inside. He wore a classic evening tuxedo, looking impossibly sharp. But it was the way his dark eyes swept over me—not with pity, not with condescension, but with raw, consuming admiration—that made my breath catch in my throat.
"You don't have to hide anymore, Emily," he said, walking over and lifting a emerald silk gown from the rack. "Put this on. Let them see who holds the cards."
Two hours later, standing in front of the full-length mirror in the master suite, I barely recognized the woman staring back. The emerald dress hugged my curves with breathtaking precision, falling in rich, heavy folds to the floor. A delicate diamond necklace—lent by Vincent, though he claimed it had simply been sitting in a drawer—sparkled against my collarbone. My hair was swept up in soft, elegant waves, framing a face that looked confident, radiant, and entirely unbowed.
When I stepped out into the hallway, Vincent was waiting.
He stopped dead in his tracks. The cool, calculating mafia boss vanished, replaced by a man utterly captivated. For a long, silent moment, neither of us spoke.

"Breathtaking," Vincent finally breathed, stepping forward and offering his arm. "Are you ready to change the narrative, Emily?"
"Ready," I said, sliding my hand into the crook of his arm, feeling the solid, unbreakable strength of his muscles beneath my palm.
