Chapter 6 - Building a New FoundationThree months later, the coastal air of Carmel had become my second skin.

I hadn't moved back into the San Francisco townhouse. Instead, I bought a sprawling, sunlit property five minutes down the road from Claire’s cottage, converting my life into a dual-location routine—running Bennett Global via encrypted fiber-optic boardrooms three days a week and spending the rest of my time on the floor of a mint-green nursery playing stacking blocks with a ten-month-old baby girl who was finally learning to say Dada.
Rebuilding trust with Claire wasn't something that happened overnight. A half-million-dollar bribe and two years of stolen time couldn't be erased with a few tearful apologies.
We took it slow. Coffee dates in downtown Carmel. Long walks along the rocky coastline as the Pacific wind whipped around us. Late-night conversations at her kitchen table after Willa had finally fallen asleep, dissecting the broken pieces of our past and slowly gluing them back together with radical honesty.
One evening in late November, as rain tapped a gentle rhythm against the kitchen window, Claire handed me a mug of hot coffee and sat across from me.
“My lawyer finalized the formal dissolution of the old settlement trust today,” Claire said quietly, watching my face. “The funds your mother deposited are officially being transferred back into Bennett Global’s corporate accounts, cleared of any legal ties.”
I nodded, blowing softly across the surface of the coffee.
“Good. Let Eleanor try to explain to federal investigators how she plans to account for it.”
Claire smiled faintly, then reached across the table, her fingers brushing against the back of my hand.
“You know... you’ve really changed, Bennett,” she murmured. “You’re not the cold, distant machine that walked out of our home two years ago.”
I turned my hand over, interlocking my fingers with hers, holding on as if she might slip through my fingers.
“I had to lose everything that mattered to realize I was building my life on hollow ground,” I confessed, looking deeply into her eyes. “I spent years chasing an empire, forgetting that the only kingdom worth having was the one we were supposed to build together.”
Claire’s eyes glistened, a soft, radiant warmth replacing the last lingering shadows of our painful history.

“We have a lot of lost time to make up for,” she whispered.
“I have the rest of my life,” I replied. “And I’m not going anywhere.”
