Chapter 5 - The Corporate War and the UltimatumBy Monday morning, the corporate headquarters of Bennett Global in downtown San Francisco was in a state of absolute, unmitigated panic.

I sat at the massive glass desk in my corner office on the forty-fifth floor, reviewing a preliminary forensic audit report prepared by Marcus Vance.

The glass doors burst open without a knock.

My mother marched into the office, her face contorted in a mask of incandescent fury, her designer handbag clutched like a weapon. Behind her stood two senior board members, looking pale and deeply unsettled.

“Have you completely lost your mind, Bennett?!” Eleanor shrieked, slamming her palms down onto my desk. “You froze my personal liquidity accounts! You locked me out of the corporate portal! You had security escort me out of my own office building like a common criminal!”

I didn't look up from my tablet. I kept scrolling through the financial logs showing how Eleanor had illegally funneled corporate contingency funds to pay off Claire a year ago.

“Sit down, Mother,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

“I will not sit down! You are committing corporate suicide! The board is calling an emergency session by noon to overturn your tyrannical—'

“The board isn't going to do a damn thing,” I interrupted, finally raising my head.

I locked my eyes onto hers—the exact same gray-blue gaze, but empty of any filial respect. I slid the tablet across the glass desk so it stopped right in front of her fingertips.

“What is this?” Eleanor sneered, glancing down.

“That is a detailed accounting of every unauthorized corporate wire transfer you executed eighteen months ago to bribe my ex-wife into silence,” I said calmly. “Using company funds to finance a personal family cover-up is a federal felony, Mother. Embezzlement, coercion, and corporate fraud.”

Eleanor’s face drained of color so fast she looked like a corpse. The two board members behind her exchanged terrified glances, instantly stepping backward toward the door.

“You... you wouldn't prosecute your own mother,” Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking.

“Try me,” I said, standing up from my chair and leaning over the desk. “You thought you were protecting the Bennett legacy. All you did was prove that our family was rotten at the core. You traded my daughter for a corporate balance sheet. And today, your reign at Bennett Global is officially over.”

Marcus Vance stepped into the office quietly, holding a thick leather folder.

“The board has already reviewed the preliminary evidence, Eleanor,” Marcus announced coldly, addressing my mother. “Your resignation from the board has been accepted unanimously. Your voting shares are being placed into a court-mandated receivership pending the federal investigation. You are finished.”

Eleanor stared at us, her mouth opening and closing. For the first time in her life, the untouchable matriarch realized she had finally pushed too far, destroying the only person who truly loved her.

Without another word, she turned and fled the office, her dignity shattered beyond repair.
