Chapter 6 - The Shadows Strike BackThe fall from the top was as swift as it was brutal.

Within forty-eight hours, the news broke across every financial network in the country: Evelyn Amos ousted from Amos Enterprises. The mysterious new majority owner revealed to be her estranged son, Nathan Amos.
Inside the sprawling mansion, the golden gates no longer felt like a fortress; they felt like a prison. The staff had dwindled, the high-society invitations had stopped coming, and the phones that once rang constantly with flattering corporate partners now remained dead silent.
Evelyn sat alone in the dim drawing room, staring blankly at a cold fireplace, her empire reduced to dust. Clara paced the room hysterically, crying over canceled credit cards and ruined social media status.
"It's all her fault! That filthy orphan stole everything from us!" Clara shrieked, her face red with rage as she grabbed a porcelain vase and smashed it against the wall. "We can't just sit here and do nothing, Mother! We have to destroy her!"
Evelyn slowly raised her head, her eyes hollow, dark, and filled with a desperate, venomous hatred. If she couldn't have her empire, and if she couldn't control her son, she would make sure Maya paid the ultimate price.
That evening, Maya was at the newly renovated downtown community center—now fully funded by Nathan’s independent trust—organizing books for the local children's library. Nathan had stepped out for a brief meeting with corporate restructuring leads across town, promising to return by sunset.
The clinic was quiet, the warm autumn breeze drifting through the open windows.
Suddenly, the front door swung open with a loud bang.
Maya looked up from the bookshelf, expecting to see Nathan. Instead, standing in the doorway was Clara Amos.
Clara’s hair was disheveled, her makeup smeared, and her eyes wide with a manic, unhinged fury. In her right hand, she clutched a heavy brass paperweight, her knuckles white.
"You think you won, don't you?" Clara hissed, stepping into the room and locking the heavy wooden door behind her, sliding the deadbolt into place. "You think you can steal our company, steal my brother, and walk away like a queen?"
Maya stepped back, her heart leaping into her throat. "Clara... put that down. You're not thinking clearly."
"I am thinking more clearly than I ever have in my life!" Clara screamed, lunging forward. "You ruined my family! You ruined my life! If I can't have my future back, neither can you!"
Maya dodged to the side as Clara swung the heavy brass weight, smashing it directly into the wooden bookshelf, sending books crashing to the floor in a chaotic heap.
"You think you're so pure, so innocent!" Clara sobbed furiously, advancing on Maya again as Maya backed toward the corner of the room. "You're just a parasite! An orphan nobody wanted! My mother should have left you rotting in that street!"
Maya tripped over a low stool, falling hard against the floorboards. Clara raised the heavy brass weight high above her head, her face twisted in a mask of murderous rage.
"Say goodbye to your happy ending," Clara whispered viciously.
CRASH!
The heavy oak front door of the community center splintered inward as it was kicked violently off its hinges.
Standing in the doorway, chest heaving, his face pale with raw, unadulterated terror, was Nathan.
"CLARA, NO!" Nathan roared, sprinting across the room with terrifying speed.
Before Clara could bring the weight down, Nathan slammed into her side, tackling her hard away from Maya. The brass paperweight flew from Clara’s hand, clattering loudly across the floor.
Nathan pinned his sister to the ground, his chest heaving, his eyes burning with a fury she had never seen in him before.
"Are you insane?!" Nathan shouted, his voice echoing off the walls, shaking with sheer adrenaline. "You could have killed her!"
Clara stared up at him, tears streaming down her face, her chest heaving as reality finally crashed down around her. "She took everything from us, Nathan... she took our family..."
"You destroyed this family all by yourselves," Nathan said, his voice dropping to a cold, devastating whisper. He stood up slowly, looking down at his sister with profound disappointment.
He didn't yell anymore. The anger had burned out, leaving only ice.

He pulled out his phone, dialed three digits, and spoke calmly into the speaker. "Police department? I need an officer at the downtown community center. Attempted assault. Send a unit immediately."
He hung up, walked past Clara without another word, and knelt down on the floor beside Maya.
