Chapter 1 - The Secret Behind the GlassThe morning sun streaming through the stained-glass windows of the Moretti estate cast long, violet shadows across the mahogany floorboards of Isabella Moretti’s private office.

Outside, the manicured gardens of the Manhattan estate were bathed in pale autumn light, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocating. I stood before the carved oak desk, my hands clutched tightly around the strap of my canvas apron. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.
Beside me, sixteen-month-old Emma sat quietly on a plush velvet armchair, her golden curls catching the sunlight, her tiny fingers clutching her well-worn gray stuffed bunny. She hummed softly under her breath—the very same melody of "You Are My Sunshine" that had broken through the silence of the forbidden medical wing less than twenty-four hours ago.
Isabella Moretti sat behind the desk. At thirty-two, Lorenzo’s younger sister was a terrifyingly elegant woman—impeccably tailored in a dark navy silk suit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe chignon. But today, her dark eyes were bloodshot, rimmed with deep red, and the manicured fingers holding the second leather folder were trembling uncontrollably.
"Clara," Isabella spoke, her voice dropping into a low, gravelly rasp that lacked its usual cold authority. "Look at this photograph."
I stepped forward on numb legs, leaning over the polished oak to look down at the glossy five-by-seven photograph resting on top of the confidential medical file.
My breath hitched violently in my chest. The color drained from my face so completely that the room seemed to tilt beneath my feet.
The photograph showed a younger, laughing Lorenzo Moretti standing on a sunlit yacht off the coast of Amalfi. Wrapped securely in his arms was a young woman with long, dark wavy hair, bright hazel eyes, and a small crescent-shaped scar just above her left eyebrow.
She looked identical to me.
Not a vague resemblance. Not a superficial similarity. The woman in the photo was my elder twin sister, Julianna Bennett—the sister who had vanished seven years ago after moving to New York, the sister whose sudden disappearance had broken my family and left me searching for answers in vain.
"J-Julianna...?" I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth, tears blurring my vision. "How... how do you have a picture of my sister?"
Isabella slowly closed the file, looking up at me with an agonizing mix of grief, guilt, and fierce, protective desperation.
"Because seven years ago, Julianna wasn't just a visitor to New York, Clara," Isabella revealed, her voice cracking into shards. "She was Lorenzo’s fiancée."
A cold shockwave rippled down my spine. "Fiancée...?"
"Eighteen months ago," Isabella continued, her hands clenching into tight fists flat against the desk, "Julianna discovered a high-level embezzlement and organ-trafficking ring operating inside the Moretti Syndicate's medical holdings—a ring run by our uncle, Victor Moretti, and Lorenzo’s former chief neurosurgeon, Dr. Richard Vance. Before Julianna could hand the evidence to the federal prosecutor, her car was forced off the George Washington Bridge."
My knees nearly gave out. I gripped the edge of the heavy desk to keep from falling onto the floorboards.
"Her body was never recovered," Isabella whispered, tears tracking down her pale cheeks. "Lorenzo spent five years hunting down everyone responsible. Three weeks ago, he finally found the master server containing the names of the men who ordered her murder. On his way back to Manhattan... his sports car was broadsided by a semi-truck."
"It wasn't an accident," I whispered, the horrific truth connecting like lightning in my mind.
"No," Isabella agreed, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, apocalyptic fire. "It was an assassination attempt executed by Uncle Victor to keep Lorenzo from releasing the files. The collision didn't just injure his body; Dr. Vance performed a emergency surgery at the site that intentionally introduced a chemical paralytic into his brain stem, placing him into a permanent, artificial coma."
She stood up from her chair, stepping around the broad desk, and dropped flat onto her knees on the hardwood floor right before me.

"Your daughter Emma didn't just sing a song, Clara," Isabella wept, reaching out to grasp my cold hands. "Her voice, her touch... it triggered a neurological response because Lorenzo’s subconscious recognizes Julianna’s bloodline! Emma carries Julianna’s genetic rhythm!"
I stared down at the feared matriarch of the Moretti family kneeling at my feet, while my baby girl hummed her sweet song in the sunlit chair, realizing that my simple cleaning job had never been an accident—it was the beginning of an absolute, dangerous war.
