Chapter 7 - The View from the TopOne year after the night that changed everything.

The annual Carter Foundation gala arrived once again, but the atmosphere inside the grand ballroom of Carter Tower bore no resemblance to the cold, tense evening of the past.

There were no whispers of scandal, no hidden monsters wearing surgical masks, and no fear lingering in the shadows.

Instead, the room radiated warmth, genuine laughter, and triumphant survival.

I stood near the edge of the stage in a stunning, backless emerald-silk gown—my shoulders bare, my skin unmarked, and my head held high—watching as the new executive director of the foundation addressed the cheering crowd of donors and advocates.

From the front row, my mother smiled proudly, holding up a glass of champagne in a silent toast.

And standing right beside me in the wings, with his strong arm resting securely and gently around my waist, was Ethan.

He leaned down, pressing a warm kiss to the crown of my head as the applause swelled through the auditorium.

“How are you holding up, Madam Director?” he murmured playfully against my hair.

“Never better,” I whispered, turning my face into his shoulder and breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of cedar and rain that belonged entirely to him.

The past had tried to break me. It had tried to silence me, trap me, and reduce me to a statistic hidden behind closed doors. But standing here now, surrounded by the life I had rebuilt with my own hands and the man who loved me without conditions, I knew the truth.

The monster who had tried to destroy me was gone, locked away in the darkness where he belonged.

And we were standing in the light, exactly where we were always meant to be.
