Chapter 4 - The Public ExecutionThe massive LED screens behind Ethan flickered.

Instead of the polished, heartwarming promotional video showcasing pediatric heart surgeries and smiling orphans, the display abruptly shifted.

A stark white background appeared, bearing the official seal of the New York City Police Department alongside medical forensic photographs, confidential emergency room intake logs, and bank transfer receipts.

A collective gasp rippled through the front rows of the ballroom.

At the center of the screen, clearly displayed in high-definition medical photography, were the exact bruises currently hidden beneath my blouse—the dark purple fingerprints on my arm, the fractured rib X-rays from six weeks ago, and sworn psychiatric affidavits from two former nurses who had been fired under suspicious circumstances after treating me at private clinics.

Andrew’s hand froze on my waist.

The color drained from his handsome face so fast he looked like a corpse under the stage lights. His breathing turned shallow, his fingers releasing their grip on my hip as if he had touched a live electrical wire.

“What... what is this?” Andrew stammered, taking a half-step forward toward the stairs, his voice cracking. “There’s a mistake—some disgruntled employee hacked the feed—”

On stage, Ethan leaned into the microphone, his eyes burning with unconcealed fury.

“There is no mistake, Dr. Vaughn,” Ethan’s voice boomed across the hall, silencing the murmurs of four hundred stunned guests. “What you are looking at is the reality of the man this foundation was about to honor. A man who hides behind a surgical mask and a charitable facade while systematically abusing, terrorizing, and isolating the woman who kept his life together.”

The ballroom erupted into sheer chaos.

Reporters scrambled for their phones, flashbulbs exploded blindingly in our direction, and prominent board members stood up from their tables in utter disbelief. Senator Collins dropped his napkin, staring at the screen with wide eyes.

Andrew spun around to face me, his handsome mask completely shattered, revealing the panic-stricken abuser beneath.

“Ava,” Andrew hissed, grabbing my wrist with a desperate, crushing grip. “Tell them it’s a lie! Tell them you fell! If you ruin me, I swear to God I will destroy your mother, I will burn your life to the ground—”

“Let go of her.”

The voice was cold, lethal, and impossibly close.

Before Andrew could react, a heavy hand gripped his forearm and twisted it backward with clinical precision. Andrew cried out in pain, stumbling forward as Ethan stepped down from the stage wings, neatly inserting himself between us.

Ethan didn't look like a tech billionaire anymore. He looked like a man executing justice.

“Touch her again,” Ethan whispered to Andrew, his voice dangerously low, “and I won't just ruin your medical license. I’ll ensure you spend the rest of your natural life eating through a straw in a maximum-security prison.”

Before Andrew could formulate a defense, heavy footsteps echoed from the rear service corridor.

Captain Miller of the NYPD, flanked by two uniformed officers, marched directly down the VIP aisle.

“Dr. Andrew Vaughn?” Captain Miller asked, flashing a gold badge as he stopped in front of us.

Andrew shook his head wildly, sweat beading on his forehead. “This is a conspiracy! A smear campaign by disgruntled corporate employees—!”

“Dr. Andrew Vaughn, you are under arrest for domestic assault, felony stalking, and coercion,” the captain interrupted smoothly, snapping steel handcuffs around the surgeon's wrists with a sharp click.

As Andrew was dragged kicking and screaming past the glittering tables of New York’s elite, past the shattered white orchids, and out toward the service elevators, absolute silence settled back over the ballroom.
