Chapter 6 - The Reclaiming of the HeirWithin thirty minutes, the grand dining room had been cleared of guests.

The politicians, judges, and corporate directors had slipped quietly out the front gates into the snowy night, eager to distance themselves from the catastrophic legal war about to consume Rebecca Hale.
Victoria had been escorted to her private suites in the west wing, stripped of her executive proxy rights over the family trust by a swift, emergency decree signed by Alexander in his private study.
The massive house was quiet now, bathed in the soft, warm glow of the Christmas tree lights.
I sat on the plush velvet sofa in the grand living room, holding a mug of warm hot chocolate.
Ethan lay beside me, his head resting comfortably in my lap, his small eyes heavy with sleep as I gently stroked his dark, wavy hair. For the first time in ten years, my heart felt light, clean, and completely free of the suffocating weight I had carried in silence.
Footsteps sounded softly on the hardwood floor.
Alexander walked into the room.
He had discarded his formal tuxedo jacket, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair messy. He looked stripped, exhausted, and carrying a profound, agonizing remorse that carved deep lines into his sharp features.
He stopped three feet away from the sofa, looking down at me and our son.
"The federal prosecutors are at the gate," Alexander said, his gravelly voice trembling slightly. "Rebecca is being formally remanded into federal custody tonight. She’s facing charges of grand larceny, wire fraud, frame-up conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."
"I know," I answered quietly. "My legal team submitted the secondary evidence packet to the district attorney three hours ago."
Alexander dropped to one knee on the rug beside the sofa—a gesture of absolute, broken humility from a man who had never bowed to anyone in his life.
He reached out his large, calloused hand, his fingers hesitating in the air before gently touching the hem of Ethan's sleeve, then raising his eyes to meet mine.
"Laura..." Alexander choked out, tears finally welling in his gray eyes, spilling down his sharp cheekbones. "My God... Laura... what did I do to you?"
I looked at my ex-husband—at the man I had once loved with every fiber of my soul, the man who had let his pride and a lie tear our family apart for ten long years.
"You broke my heart, Alexander," I whispered softly, every word landing with absolute, undeniable truth. "You took my baby from my arms. You let your security throw me onto the highway in a blizzard. You made me spend a decade fighting alone in the dark just to earn the right to hug my son."
"I will give you everything," Alexander sobbed softly, pressing his forehead against the edge of the sofa cushion beside my knee. "The estate. The shipping lines. My voting shares. My life. Just tell me what I have to do to earn your forgiveness."
I looked down at Ethan, who let out a soft, contented sigh in his sleep, his small hand clutching my sweater tightly.
"You don't earn ten years back with money or corporate shares, Alexander," I said, my voice gentle, calm, and unyielding. "You start by giving me full, sole legal and physical custody of Ethan."

Alexander didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. "Yes. It's yours. Whatever papers your lawyers have, I will sign them tonight."
"And second," I continued, looking out the panoramic windows at the falling snow outside, "you are going to let me take our son home to my house for Christmas morning."
