Chapter 5 - The Confession in the SnowThe air inside the grand dining room went completely, terrifyingly dead.

Judge Vance leaned forward, adjusting his reading glasses, his eyes scanning the certified Delaware documents displayed on the wall. "My God... that's a federal tax identification number registered to Miss Hale's private trust."

Rebecca’s face went from pale to a translucent, sickly gray. Her hands trembled so violently her silk napkins slipped from her lap onto the floorboards. "It's... it's a forgery! She forged those documents! She's an IT consultant, Alexander! She knows how to manipulate digital files!"

"I don't just have digital files, Rebecca," I said softly.

I pulled a small, silver digital voice recorder from my leather bag, set it flat on the mahogany table, and pressed play.

A crackle of static echoed through the room's sound system, followed by the clear, sharp voice of a man breathing heavily—a voice Alexander recognized instantly.

Marcus Brody: "I told you, I ain't taking the fall for a murder charge! The deal was I fake a brake line cut on Miss Hale's car, she gives me fifty grand, and I leave town!"

Rebecca's Voice: "Keep your mouth shut, Marcus! The police already found the wire transfer in Laura's name! Alexander believes every word! She's getting thrown out of the house tonight! If you breathe a word about Blue Atlantic, I'll have my father's security team put you in the river!"

The audio recording ended with a sharp click.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Alexander stood up from the head of the table.

His six-foot-four frame uncoiled like a steel spring, his face dark with a lethal, terrifying rage that made every board member and politician in the room shrink back into their chairs.

He didn't look at me. He slowly turned his head, his gray eyes locking onto Rebecca Hale.

"Alexander..." Rebecca whimpered, backing away from the table, her hands raised in a frantic, desperate gesture. "Alexander, please... listen to me! I did it for us! She was a nobody! She was a poor girl from Southie! She didn't deserve to be the mistress of this estate! She didn't deserve your name! I loved you, Alexander! I've loved you since we were children!"

"You framed my wife," Alexander whispered, his voice dropping into a register so dark it sounded like grinding stones. "You made me throw the mother of my child out into the freezing snow ten years ago."

"She was ruining your future!" Rebecca shrieked, her aristocratic mask completely shattering into ugly, hysterical madness. "My father died for you! You owed my family everything!"

"My father's debt to your father was settled twenty years ago, Rebecca," Alexander roared, slamming his heavy fist flat against the mahogany table, shattering two crystal wine glasses into a hundred sparkling shards. "Marco!"

The double doors of the dining hall burst open.

Marco and four armed private security officers flooded the room.

"Take her," Alexander commanded, pointing a heavy finger at Rebecca. "Secure her in the lower holding room. Call the United States Attorney’s Office and hand over every recording, every wire transfer, and every ledger Miss Vance just displayed."

"Alexander, no! You can't do this to me!" Rebecca screamed as Marco and the guards grabbed her silk-clad arms, pinning them behind her back, dragging her kicking and screaming out through the grand double doors. "Victoria! Help me! Tell him!"

Victoria Russo sat frozen in her chair, her face completely drained of color, her hands shaking so violently she couldn't even reach for her walking stick. She looked at her son, then slowly turned her eyes to look at me—the woman she had dismissed as a penniless orphan a decade ago.

"Laura..." Victoria rasped out, her sharp, arrogant voice cracking into a pathetic whimpering rasp. "Laura... please... we... we were deceived..."

"You weren't deceived, Victoria," I said, looking into the old woman's eyes with cold, unbothered detachment. "You were arrogant. You believed what you wanted to believe because it suited your social pedigree."
