Chapter 5 - The Siege of Mooca

The rain had stopped, leaving the industrial district of Mooca wrapped in a thick, choking mist. Abandoned textile mills and rusted corrugated-iron warehouses lined the dead-end street where Sanctuary Fertility operated under the cover of a fake import-export firm.
Three unmarked police cruisers and a heavy tactical transport van rolled silently down the wet asphalt, cutting their headlights fifty yards from the target building.
Marcos sat in the front passenger seat of Inspector Vance’s vehicle, his fingers clenched so tightly around the grip of a police-issued tactical radio that his knuckles were blue.
“Listen to me, Marcos,” Vance warned for the third time as she chambered a round in her service pistol. “When we breach, your job is to secure Ana and the baby if they’re inside any secondary medical wing. Let my officers handle Silva. Do you understand?”
“Just open the door, Inspector,” Marcos muttered through gritted teeth.
The tactical team moved with lethal efficiency. The lead battering ram struck the reinforced steel side door of the warehouse with a thunderous CRACK, shattering the lock and swinging the heavy metal panel inward.
“Police! Federal warrant! Nobody move!”
Flashbang grenades detonated inside with blinding white concussive blasts and deafening roars, filling the vast, sterile industrial interior with thick gray smoke.
Marcos charged through the doorway right behind the shield-bearing officers. The inside of the warehouse looked nothing like a medical clinic. It was a high-tech underground laboratory outfitted with cold-storage incubators, high-grade surgical tables, and rows of refrigerated containment units humming behind reinforced glass walls.
“Clear!” shouted the lead tactical officer.
“Clear!”
“Over here! In the secondary operating theater!” another officer yelled from down the hall.
Marcos sprinted past rows of stainless-steel counters, his boots splashing through puddles of chemical disinfectant. He burst through the swinging doors of the operating theater just as Dr. Hernan Silva—a tall, silver-haired man in a blood-spattered surgical gown—was frantically trying to shred documents near an industrial incinerator.
“Don’t move!” Vance screamed, leveling her weapon directly at Silva’s chest.
Hernan froze, a crumpled sheet of paper dropping from his trembling fingers. He slowly turned around, a sickening, unrepentant smile spreading across his pale face.
“Ah, Inspector. And Mr. Marcos,” Hernan said smoothly, raising his hands in mock surrender. “You’re a bit late for the delivery. The surrogate parameters have already been exported to our buyers in Zurich.”
Marcos didn't hesitate. He lunged across the surgical table, grabbing Hernan by the collar of his gown and slamming him against the concrete wall with a force that rattled the medical trays.
“Where is my son?!” Marcos roared, pressing his forearm against Hernan’s throat.
Hernan choked, coughing violently, but his eyes remained ice-cold. “Check... check incubator four... behind the glass...”
Marcos shoved him away into the arms of two rushing police officers and sprinted toward the corner of the lab. There, behind a heavy glass partition, sat a sterile neonatal incubator glowing with soft blue light.
Inside lay a tiny infant, no larger than a loaf of bread, hooked up to a tangle of micro-tubing and a tiny breathing mask. A digital monitor above the unit blinked a steady, healthy green.
Miguel.

Marcos pressed his palms against the glass, his breath hitching as a sob finally broke through his chest. The baby let out a tiny, indignant squeak, waving a microscopic fist in the air. He was alive. He was safe.
Behind him, Dr. Hernan Silva was handcuffed and dragged out toward the waiting patrol vans, screaming curses into the misty São Paulo air.
