Chapter 4 - The Society TrapNathan was escorted out of the penthouse thirty seconds later by two silent guards, leaving behind the faint scent of panic and cheap cologne.

I stood by the window, watching him stumble out of the building's front glass doors into the bright Manhattan sunlight, desperately dialing his father on his cell phone.

"You didn't have to threaten him," I murmured, though my heart was beating a frantic, excited rhythm against my ribs.

"I didn't threaten him," Dante replied, walking up behind me, stopping just inches away so I could feel the heat radiating from his body. "I educated him. There is a distinct difference."

I turned around, looking up into his dark, unreadable eyes. "What happens now, Dante? Your financial takeover... the wedding scandal... New York society is going to tear me apart. Every tabloid in the city is going to paint me as a gold-digging opportunist who ruined a prominent family."

Dante reached out, his warm fingers gently tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. The casual intimacy of the gesture sent a shiver down my spine.

"Let them talk," Dante said quietly. "Society only has power over you if you care about their approval. And by tomorrow night, you won't need to care about any of them."

"What are you planning?"

"There is a charity gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art tomorrow evening," Dante said, a dark, calculating smile playing on his lips. "Every high-society elite, every corrupt politician, and every social parasite in Manhattan will be in attendance—including Veronica Hale and the remaining members of the Whitmore family."

I froze. "You want me to go there? After what happened?"

"I want you to walk into the lions' den, Elena," Dante said, his voice dropping into a fierce, hypnotic register. "Not as a victim hiding in a corner, but on my arm. I want them to see that the woman they tried to destroy is now sitting at the right hand of the man who controls this city."

The audacity of the idea took my breath away. It was dangerous, reckless, and completely intoxicating.

"And Veronica?" I asked.

"Veronica will be there," Dante murmured, his eyes dark as midnight. "Waiting for her invitation to high society to be restored. And we are going to deliver a very special kind of homecoming."

The next twenty-four hours were a blur of high-end tailoring, private security briefings, and silent preparation. Dante had a team of stylists arrive at the penthouse by dawn. They brought racks of haute couture dresses that cost more than my old Brooklyn apartment building.

When I finally stepped out of the master dressing room on the evening of the gala, I barely recognized the woman in the full-length mirror.

The dress was an absolute masterpiece of dark midnight silk, fitted tightly to my silhouette, featuring an asymmetrical neckline and a high slit that cascaded down like liquid obsidian. It wasn't a wedding dress meant to please traditional families; it was armor crafted from elegance and power.

Dante stood waiting by the private elevator, wearing a bespoke tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders with lethal precision. When he turned and saw me, his dark eyes locked onto mine, and for the first time since I met him, the cold, calculating mafia boss completely lost his words.

He walked over slowly, his gaze tracing every line of the dress before rising to meet my eyes.

"Breathtaking," he whispered, his voice rough. "They won't know what hit them."
