Chapter 5 - Shadows in the BasementThe holding room in the basement of the Vale estate was designed to strip away a man’s courage before he even spoke a word. Soundproofed concrete walls, harsh overhead fluorescent lighting, and a total absence of windows created an environment where time lost all meaning.

When Marcus and I followed Dominic down the metal stairs, Vincent Rossi was already seated at a heavy steel table, handcuffed to an iron ring bolted into the center of the surface.
Vince looked pale, sweating profusely through his expensive silk shirt. When the heavy metal door creaked open and Dominic walked in, Vince flinched violently.
“Boss—Mr. Vale! I swear to God, I can explain!” Vince stammered, slamming his bound hands against the table as he stood up half-heartedly. “It was a misunderstanding! The distributor fees—they were just administrative errors—”
Dominic didn’t say a word. He pulled out a steel chair opposite Vince, sat down slowly, and rested his elbows on the table. The silence stretched out for ten agonizing seconds.
I stood quietly in the shadows near the door, my clipboard in hand, acting as both secretary and silent witness.
“Administrative errors,” Dominic repeated softly. His voice sounded calm, almost conversational, which made it ten times more terrifying. “Four thousand dollars a month routed through Apex Holdings in the Cayman Islands is a very elaborate administrative error, Vince.”
“I was framed! Someone set me up!” Vince shouted, his voice cracking with panic.
“Who?” Dominic asked.
Vince hesitated, his eyes darting toward the door.
“You have three seconds to decide whether you want to spend the next ten years in a federal penitentiary or a shallow grave in upstate New York, Vincent,” Dominic said, his tone never rising above a conversational murmur. “Who is paying you to skim my accounts?”
Vince swallowed hard, trembling violently. “It was... it was Arthur Pendelton’s campaign manager! They came to me three months ago. They said if I leaked shipping manifests and skimmed funds to create fake financial irregularities, the federal government would use it to raid your operations!”
I leaned slightly forward from the shadows, my analytical mind instantly connecting the dots. That’s why the federal marshals showed up today with an expired warrant. They were hoping to catch Dominic off guard while Vince’s fake paper trail was still fresh.
Dominic’s jaw tightened. A muscle twitched in his cheek.
“Pendelton,” Dominic murmured, tasting the name like poison on his tongue.
“Yes! Please, Mr. Vale, I have a family, I have kids—”
“Marcus,” Dominic interrupted, standing up from his chair.
“Boss?” Marcus stepped forward.
“Take Vince to the airstrip. Put him on a cargo flight to South America. Tell him if he ever sets foot in New York again, I won’t bother with a trial.”
Vince went limp with relief, blubbering and thanking Dominic as Marcus dragged him out of the room.
When the heavy metal door slammed shut behind them, Dominic stood alone in the center of the room. His broad shoulders were tense, his hands balled into tight fists at his sides.
I stepped out from the shadows, walking slowly toward him.
“Mr. Vale?” I asked softly.
Dominic turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine. In that moment, the terrifying mafia boss disappeared, replaced by a man carrying the crushing weight of an empire that never let him rest.
“You figured out the federal angle before anyone else did, Maya,” Dominic said, his voice unusually quiet. “You’re entirely too smart for your own good.”
“Smart enough to know when my boss is about to declare open war on a U.S. Senator,” I replied, stopping a foot away from him.
Dominic reached out, his warm fingers gently wrapping around my wrist. The touch was so sudden, so intimate, that my breath hitched.
“Arthur Pendelton thinks he can use my syndicate as a stepping stone for his political career,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a dark, mesmerizing growl. “He has no idea what he’s waking up.”

“Then let’s show him,” I whispered, looking straight into his eyes.
Dominic stared at me, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. For a terrifying, exhilarating second, the distance between us vanished entirely.
