Chapter 1 - The Shattered VowThe vaulted ceiling of St. Jude’s Cathedral echoed with a suffocating silence that felt heavier than any thunderstorm.

My father, Alaric Lisandra, did not flinch from the front row. He did not gasp, shout, or shift his posture. He simply sat motionless, his cold, calculating gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that promised a reckoning far more terrifying than any public outburst.
"Elena," Cassian hissed, his smile plastered across his face for the benefit of the front-row photographers, though his fingers dug viciously into my wrist beneath the heavy lace of my gown, leaving a familiar, burning sting. "Do not test me right now. Say the words."
"I can't," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet chapel with a crystalline clarity that made the officiant drop his prayer book. I stepped backward, shaking out of his grasp as the invisible chains binding my entire life suddenly snapped. "I won't marry you, Cassian. I won't be traded like a piece of cargo to secure your father's ports."
Pandemonium erupted instantly. Whispers cascaded through the pews like rolling thunder. Vittorio Valtieri stood up from the groom’s side, his face purple with rage, while my father slowly rose to his feet, adjusting his cuffs with terrifying composure.
Before Cassian could lunge forward to grab me, the heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open with a resounding crash. Roman Vescari stepped into the aisle. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo like the rest of the wedding party; he wore a sharp, charcoal-gray suit, a dark overcoat thrown casually over one shoulder, and an expression of cold, absolute calm.
"The bride has made her choice, gentlemen," Roman’s deep voice resonated effortlessly across the vaulted hall, drawing every eye in the room. "And I believe she’s overdue for a change of scenery."

Cassian cursed under his breath, releasing all pretense of polite society as he lunged toward me. "You bitch! You planned this with him!"
I didn't run. Instead, I lifted the heavy skirts of my custom wedding gown, turned my back on the Valtieri family, and walked straight down the aisle toward Roman Vescari—stepping out of the cage my father had built for me, and into a war I was finally ready to fight.
