Chapter 4 - The Poisoned LegacyThree days after Evelyn's arrest, the dark cloud over the Whitmore family seemed to lift slightly. Oliver had been discharged from the hospital, his lungs fully recovered, and he was back home resting in a new, bright room on the ground floor of Ryan and Maya’s private residence—far away from the main estate.

Maya sat on the porch, wrapped in a warm blanket, watching Oliver play softly with his wooden blocks inside the living room. Ryan walked out, holding two mugs of hot chocolate, handing one to his wife before sitting beside her.

“The police completed their full audit of Mother’s personal accounts today,” Ryan said softly, his arm wrapping around Maya’s shoulders.

Maya looked up, her expression cautious. “Did they find something else?”

Ryan sighed, taking a slow sip of his drink. “It’s worse than we thought, Maya. For the past two years, Evelyn was using corporate funds to pay off a private security firm. She had hired private investigators to track your family, your past, your friends... trying to find any mistake she could use against you in court.”

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. “She was watching my family?”

“Yes,” Ryan said, anger flickering in his eyes once more. “When she couldn't find any real dirt on you because you’re a good person, she decided to create it herself. She bought that hidden camera three weeks ago. She bribed our former housekeeper to hide Oliver’s backup inhalers in the basement so you wouldn't have extra supplies when she made her move.”

Maya closed her eyes, resting her head against Ryan’s chest. “I kept thinking... maybe I was crazy, Ryan. Every time something went missing in the house, she blamed me. Every time Oliver had a tiny scratch, she made me feel like the worst mother in the world. I almost believed her.”

Ryan pulled her closer, kissing the top of her head with deep tenderness. “You are an incredible mother, Maya. I was blind for letting her manipulate our lives for so long. I will spend the rest of my life making it up to you.”

Suddenly, Ryan’s phone chimed. It was a text from Julian:

“Ryan, you need to come to the precinct. Marcus Sterling is trying to execute a secret plea deal using your late father’s estate assets.”

Ryan’s jaw set into a hard line. He set his mug down and looked at Maya. “I have to end this once and for all.”

“I’m coming with you,” Maya said, standing up firmly.

“Maya, you don't have to face her again—”

“I need to, Ryan,” Maya interrupted, her eyes clear and strong. “I spent two years being afraid of Evelyn Whitmore. I won't be afraid anymore.”

An hour later, Ryan and Maya walked into the interrogation visitor room at the police precinct.

Evelyn sat at the metal table, wearing a gray inmate jumpsuit. Her silver hair was unkempt, her face drawn and pale without her expensive makeup. Sitting beside her was Marcus Sterling, looking stressed and exhausted.

When Evelyn saw Maya step into the room holding Ryan’s hand, a flash of pure hatred ignited in her eyes.

“You brought her here?” Evelyn spat, her voice raspy. “To mock me?”

“We are here to tell you that there will be no plea bargain, Mother,” Ryan stated flatly, setting a stack of legal documents on the table. “We are freezing all family trust accounts. Marcus cannot use my father’s legacy money to pay your legal fees or bribe officials.”

Marcus Sterling sighed, closing his folder. “Mr. Whitmore, without those funds, your mother faces a mandatory minimum sentence of eight years in state prison.”

“Good,” Ryan replied without a second of hesitation. “That is where she belongs.”

Evelyn slammed her hands against the metal table, her chains rattling loudly. “I am your mother, Ryan! I gave you everything! I made you the man you are today! How dare you betray me for an outsider!”

Maya took a slow, confident step forward, leaning over the table, looking Evelyn directly in her bloodshot eyes.

“I was an outsider, Evelyn,” Maya said, her voice dropping into a calm, powerful register that filled the room. “I came into your family with nothing but love for your son and grandson. You tried to break me because you couldn't control me. But look at you now. You are sitting in a cell, surrounded by concrete walls, while my son is safe, healthy, and happy in my arms.”

Evelyn stared at Maya, her mouth opening, but no words came out.

“You didn't protect the family, Evelyn,” Maya added quietly. “You destroyed yourself.”

Maya turned toward Ryan, slipping her hand into his. “Let’s go home, Ryan. She doesn't exist to us anymore.”

Ryan looked at his mother one last time—seeing not the grand matriarch of the Whitmore empire, but a lonely, defeated woman consumed by her own toxic greed.

“Goodbye, Mother,” Ryan said, turning his back on her as he walked out the door with his wife, leaving Evelyn screaming hysterically into the empty room.
