Chapter 2 - The Hospital StandThe siren of the ambulance cut through the storm as it rushed toward Saint Jude Children's Hospital. Inside, Ryan sat on the narrow bench, holding Maya’s hand with his right hand while his left rested gently on Oliver’s small chest. The oxygen monitor chimed rhythmically, a steady signal that his son’s breathing was slowly stabilizing.

Maya looked exhausted. A paramedic had cleaned the blood from her nose and placed a small bandage near her lip, but her eyes were filled with lingering horror.

“I was so scared, Ryan,” Maya whispered, her voice trembling beneath the mask the paramedic had given her. “When Oliver started wheezing, I reached for his bag, but it was gone. Then your mother walked in. She had the inhaler in her hand, but she wouldn't give it to me. She told me I was a terrible mother. She said I was ruining the Whitmore name.”

Ryan squeezed her hand tightly, his knuckles turning white. “Don't talk about it now, sweetheart. Just rest. I’m here. I’m not leaving your side.”

“She hit me when I tried to grab the bag from her,” Maya continued, tears spilling over her lashes. “She threw me against the table, Ryan. She watched Oliver gasp for air and she laughed softly... She said I had ten seconds to sign the custody surrender papers or she would let him pass out.”

A surge of dark rage washed over Ryan. He looked down at his three-year-old boy, whose eyelids were fluttering weakly. How could a grandmother do something so vile? How had he been so blind to his mother’s true nature for all these years?

When the ambulance pulled up to the emergency bay, the doors flew open. Doctors rushed Oliver straight into the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Ryan helped Maya out of the vehicle, wrapping his jacket around her cold shoulders.

As they walked into the private waiting area, the glass doors opened, and two police officers walked in alongside Julian—Ryan’s trusted corporate attorney and closest friend.

“Ryan,” Julian said urgently, stepping forward. “The police have officially seized the video recording from the hidden camera. Officer Davis reviewed the footage on the scene.”

Officer Davis nodded grimly. “Mr. Whitmore, the footage is clear. It shows Mrs. Evelyn Whitmore entering the room, hiding the inhaler, provoking your wife, and initiating physical contact. She deliberately denied medical care to a infant in distress.”

“Where is she now?” Ryan asked, his voice deathly quiet.

“She’s currently at the central police station being questioned,” Officer Davis replied. “However, given her social standing and her legal team, she is attempting to post bail and claim the video was edited.”

Before Ryan could respond, the elevator doors at the end of the hall dinged.

Out walked Evelyn Whitmore.

She wasn't in handcuffs. Standing beside her was Marcus Sterling, the most expensive defense attorney in the state. Evelyn looked immaculate once again, having refreshed her makeup, though her eyes were filled with bitter malice as she spotted Ryan and Maya.

“Ryan,” Evelyn said, walking toward them with absolute arrogance, her heels clicking loudly on the tile floor. “This ridiculous circus has gone far enough. I’ve posted bail. Marcus is handling the police mistake.”

Ryan stood up slowly, stepping between Evelyn and Maya. “A mistake?”

“Yes, a mistake!” Evelyn snapped, narrowing her eyes. “That woman you married staged that whole scene! She knew the camera was there! She framed me to turn you against your own blood!”

Marcus Sterling stepped forward, holding a leather briefcase. “Mr. Whitmore, as your family’s head counsel, I strongly advise you not to press charges. The public scandal will ruin the Whitmore Enterprise stock price. We can handle this privately within the family.”

Ryan looked at Sterling, then turned his gaze back to his mother.

“You put your own grandson’s life in danger for a corporate legacy,” Ryan said, his voice terrifyingly steady. “You let him suffocate while you tried to force my wife to sign away her rights.”

“I did what was necessary to protect this family from a penniless gold-digger!” Evelyn sneered, dropping her polite facade completely. “She doesn't belong in our world, Ryan! She is weak! Look at her!”

“She is ten times the human being you will ever be,” Ryan roared, his voice echoing through the entire hospital floor.

He pulled a set of keys and a golden seal ring from his pocket—the symbol of his presidency at Whitmore Enterprises—and slammed them onto the reception desk beside Evelyn.

“As of this second, I am stepping down as CEO,” Ryan declared, staring directly into his mother’s shocked eyes. “I am revoking your access to my son. If you ever come within five hundred yards of my wife or child again, I will personally see to it that you spend the rest of your life in a state prison.”

Evelyn gasped, stepping back as if struck. “You can’t do that! The board will never support you!”

“The board will see the video tomorrow morning, Mother,” Ryan whispered coldly. “Enjoy your wealth alone.”
