Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of a Son"Your startup firm is officially dissolved, Julian," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel.

Julian froze, his mouth hanging open in disbelief. "Dissolved?! But Mom! I spent two years working on that technology! It was my dream!"

"Your dream was built on a five-hundred-thousand-dollar seed grant provided anonymously by the Vance Foundation," I revealed, watching the final layer of his delusion crumble away. "Every piece of equipment in your office, every server you rented, every salary you paid to your four engineers... came from my pocket. You thought you were a business genius, Julian. But you were just living on an allowance provided by the very mother you were ashamed to introduce to your friends."

Julian gasped, staggering back a step as if he had been physically struck. "You... you funded my company?"

"I wanted you to succeed," I said, my eyes glistening with a single, quiet tear that I refused to let fall. "I wanted you to build something of your own so you could feel proud. But when I saw you look away while that girl sprayed me with water... I realized that giving you money without instilling character was the greatest mistake of my life."

"Mom, please!" Julian cried, rushing forward and throwing himself at my feet, grabbing my knees just as Chloe had done moments before. "I was stupid! I was confused! Chloe pressured me! She told me her father wouldn't invest if you didn't fit into their high-society image! I did it for the family!"

"Do not lie to yourself, Julian," I said, looking down at him with immense pity. "You didn't do it for the family. You did it because you wanted to wear a five-thousand-dollar suit and drink expensive whiskey with people who looked down on where you came from. You traded your mother's honor for a fake seat at a fake table."

I reached into my blazer pocket, pulled out a small, velvet box, and tossed it onto the floor beside him.

It bounced and popped open, revealing the heirloom pearl engagement ring that had belonged to my mother—the ring Julian had asked me to give him six months ago so he could propose to Chloe.

"I am taking back the ring," I said quietly. "And as of today, I am removing you as a trustee of the Vance Land Trust. The apartment you rent in the city belongs to the trust. You have forty-eight hours to pack your clothes and leave."

"Mom! No! You're cutting me off?!" Julian screamed, his voice turning shrill and hysterical. "I'm your only son! You can't just leave me with nothing!"

May you like

"You aren't leaving with nothing, Julian," I said, stepping past him toward the boardroom door. "You have your health, your education, and your youth. Go out into the real world. Get a job at a restaurant or a grocery store. Count your pennies to pay rent. Learn what it feels like to stand in the rain with worn-out shoes. And when you finally understand what human dignity actually costs... perhaps then you can come find me."

I walked out of the boardroom, leaving my son weeping on the floor beside the woman who had ruined him, as the legal team began executing the final seizure papers.
