Chapter 3 - The Falling DominoesJulian stood frozen between us, looking from his father-in-law's terrified face back to mine.

"Arthur... what are you talking about?" Julian stammered, his voice high and frantic. "E.L. Vance is the primary shareholder of the regional bank that holds my firm's credit line. It's an offshore institutional trust!"
"It isn't offshore, Julian," I said calmly, smoothing down my wet sweater. "It was established thirty years ago by your late grandfather. E.L. stands for Eleanor Lorraine. Me."
The words hung in the air like a heavy iron weight.
Several guests at the surrounding tables stood up from their chairs. Mayor Harrison, who had been sitting near the fountain sipping wine, suddenly pushed past his aides and rushed toward the patio, his eyes fixed on me.
"Eleanor?" Mayor Harrison gasped, recognizing my face as the memories of local municipal board meetings from a decade ago came flooding back. "My God... Eleanor Vance! I haven't seen you since the city hall restoration ceremony! What on earth is happening here?!"
"Mayor Harrison," I said politely, nodding to him. "I came to celebrate my son's engagement. But it appears Miss Sterling and her father felt my presence was a health hazard to their high society."
"Mr. Mayor, please!" Arthur begged, his hands sweating as he clutched the legal document against his chest. "Mrs. Vance... Eleanor... my daughter didn't know who you were! She was just trying to protect the privacy of the venue! We didn't realize Julian’s mother was... was you!"
"So if I were just a poor seamstress," I said, stepping closer to Arthur, my eyes turning into sharp chips of dry ice, "it would have been perfectly acceptable to spray me with cold water in front of thirty people? It would have been acceptable to mock my clothes and call me a beggar?"
"No! Of course not!" Arthur stammered, frantically turning to Chloe. "Chloe, apologize to Mrs. Vance right now! Get down on your knees and apologize!"
Chloe was pale now, her pride battling violently with the sudden, terrifying realization that her family's entire empire was crumbling before her eyes.
"Dad! You want me to kneel to her?!" Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking. "She's wearing a ten-dollar sweater! She's lying! She probably forged those papers!"
BZZZZ. BZZZZ. BZZZZ.
Before Arthur could answer, his smartphone began ringing furiously in his pocket. Then Chloe’s phone rang. Then the phones of four other prominent businessmen sitting on the patio began buzzing simultaneously with urgent alert notifications.
Arthur pulled his phone out with shaking hands. He clicked the screen on.
A live news broadcast from the state's largest financial network popped up on his screen. The headline running across the bottom of the ticker in bold red letters read:
BREAKING NEWS: SHOCKING FOOTAGE EMERGES OF STERLING HOLDINGS HEIRESS HUMILIATING ANONYMOUS BILLIONAIRE LANDLORD AT OAKRIDGE CLUB.
Below the headline was the crystal-clear 4K video I had recorded from inside my grocery bag.
It captured Chloe’s cruel sneer in perfect lighting. It captured her spraying the hose. It captured her shouting "Beggars don't belong at weddings here!" It captured Julian looking away and sipping his whiskey. And it captured Arthur Sterling standing on the steps, laughing.
"Oh... oh God..." Chloe gasped, looking at her own phone screen as her Instagram and social media accounts were instantly flooded with tens of thousands of enraged comments from people across the country.

"Dad..." Chloe wept, her phone slipping from her fingers and cracking against the floor. "The video... it has two million views already..."
"It’s not just two million views, Miss Sterling," I said, taking my phone out of my grocery bag and tapping the screen once more. "It has reached the board of directors of Sterling Holdings. And as the majority holder of your father’s corporate debt, I have just called an emergency foreclosure meeting for 9:00 AM tomorrow morning."
