Chapter 4 - The Price of Treason"Mom! No! Please!"

Julian dropped to his knees right there on the wet grass, grabbing the hem of my damp skirt, his eyes wide with sheer, desperate panic.
"Mom, you can't do this!" Julian sobbed, all of his arrogant posture completely vanishing. "If you foreclose on Sterling Holdings, Arthur's company goes bankrupt! The three-million-dollar investment into my startup will be cancelled! I'll have nothing!"
I looked down at my son. The boy I had spent twenty-four years loving, protecting, and supporting.
"You already have nothing, Julian," I said, my voice cold and unyielding. "Because you traded your character, your loyalty, and your mother's dignity for a piece of cheap gold and a seat at a table that treated you like a pet."
"I was doing it for us!" Julian lied frantically, his voice cracking as tears streamed down his cheeks, smearing his expensive makeup. "I wanted to elevate our family! I wanted us to be respected!"
"Respect isn't bought by standing by while a bully sprays an innocent person with water, Julian," I said, pulling my skirt out of his grasp. "You were ashamed of me when you thought I was poor. Let us see how much respect you command when you are truly broke."
Arthur Sterling looked like he was having a heart attack. He grabbed his chest, staggering backward against a stone pillar. "Mrs. Vance... please... Sterling Holdings employs six hundred people in this city! You can't liquidate us over a domestic dispute!"
"It isn't a domestic dispute, Arthur," Mayor Harrison interrupted, stepping between Arthur and me, his face filled with stern disgust. "It’s a revelation of character. And as Mayor, I am officially instructing the city council to pause all pending municipal development permits for Sterling Construction until a full ethical and financial audit is completed."
"No... no, no, no!" Chloe shrieked, grabbing her hair in absolute hysterics. She turned on Julian, shoving him hard in the chest. "This is your fault! You told me your mother was a nobody! You told me she lived on a small pension in the countryside! You ruined my family!"
"My fault?!" Julian yelled back, standing up with his face red with rage. "You were the one holding the hose, you psychotic brat! You humiliated her!"
"Because she looked like a homeless person!" Chloe screamed back, her designer jumpsuit now stained with dirt from the wet grass. "You didn't stop me! You drank your whiskey and told her to leave through the back gate!"
The thirty distinguished guests watched in stunned silence as the young, glamorous couple turned on each other like wild dogs, screaming insults, airing dirty laundry, and destroying whatever fragile affection they had claimed to possess.
I watched them for a moment, feeling neither anger nor pleasure. Just a quiet, clean emptiness.
I turned my back on the screaming match, picking up my wet grocery bag, and began walking calmly toward the main gates of the Oakridge Country Club.
"Mrs. Vance!" Mayor Harrison called out, walking quickly beside me. "May I have my driver take you home? Your clothes are soaked, and it's getting cold."
"Thank you, Mr. Mayor," I said politely, offering a gentle smile. "That would be very kind."

As I stepped into the back seat of the Mayor's sleek black sedan, I looked out the window one last time.
Julian was running down the driveway behind the car, waving his arms desperately, crying out my name. But the black tinted glass rolled up, shutting out his cries, and the car pulled away into the cool afternoon air.
