Chapter 7 - The Crown We Choose

Six months later.

The grand ballroom of the Meridian Grand was bathed in golden light once again, but tonight, there was no hostility in the air—only breathless, reverent awe.

It was the annual Chicago Philanthropic Gala, the most prestigious social event of the year. And for the first time in history, the event was being hosted and chaired by the city's newest power couple: Kaelen and Elena Moretti.

Elena stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, looking down over the ballroom floor. She wore a stunning, backless crimson silk gown that hugged her curves to absolute perfection, a diamond-encrusted necklace catching the light of the chandeliers with every breath she took.

She wasn't the girl standing in the back row hiding behind a cheap dress anymore.

She was the woman everyone looked at.

Kaelen stood beside her, resting his hand gently at the small of her back. He looked magnificent in his bespoke black tuxedo, his amber eyes shining with pride as he looked down at her.

"Nervous?" Kaelen murmured, leaning close so his lips brushed her ear.

Elena smiled, turning her head to meet his gaze. "Not a chance."

She looked out over the sea of Chicago’s elite—the same people who had once watched her drown in silence. Now, they stood beneath her, raising their champagne glasses in silent, respectful toast as the string quartet began to play a soft, sweeping waltz.

Kaelen offered his hand, and Elena took it without hesitation, stepping out onto the massive dance floor as the crowd parted to give them room. As he pulled her into his arms, spinning her gracefully beneath the golden light of a thousand crystals, Elena finally understood what real power felt like.

It wasn't about money, or fear, or control.

It was about standing beside someone who looked at your broken pieces and decided to build an empire around them.

The music swelled, filling the ballroom, and as Kaelen pulled her closer, Elena smiled into the dark wool of his lapel, knowing for the first time in her life that she was exactly where she belonged.
