Chapter 5 - The Fortress on the Lake

The Maybach rolled smoothly away from the Meridian Grand, leaving the glittering lights of downtown Chicago behind as it surged onto Lake Shore Drive. The dark, choppy waters of Lake Michigan crashed against the concrete barriers to their left, illuminated by the distant, glowing skyline.
Elena sat in silence, nursing the bourbon in her glass, her mind racing in a dozen different directions.
She was married. Not just to anyone, but to Kaelen Moretti—a name whispered in Chicago boardrooms and dark back alleys alike with a mixture of awe and absolute terror. The Moretti family controlled shipping lanes, real estate trusts, and financial institutions across the entire Midwest. They were untouchable.
And now, according to Kaelen, she was legally tied to him.
"Where are we going?" Elena finally asked, breaking the long silence as the car turned off the main highway onto a private, wooded access road guarded by massive wrought-iron security gates that parted automatically as they approached.
"Home," Kaelen replied simply, not looking up from his tablet where he was reviewing a series of corporate security logs.
"That's not my home," Elena countered, her defensive instincts flaring up. "My apartment is on the South Side. I have a tiny studio with a leaky radiator and a cat waiting for me."
Kaelen looked up, his amber eyes softening just a fraction. "Your apartment was broken into and ransacked forty-eight hours ago by one of Marcus’s creditors looking for hidden assets. Your landlord has already been compensated, and your cat—a rather grumpy orange tabby named Barnaby—is currently being transported to the estate in a climate-controlled carrier."
Elena blinked, stunned. "You... you moved my cat?"
"I don't leave loose ends, Elena," Kaelen said smoothly. "And I certainly don't leave my wife’s belongings in a vulnerable position."
The car swept around a final curve in the winding driveway, and Elena caught her breath.
Rising before them through the dark pine trees was a sprawling, gothic-revival stone estate that looked like it had been lifted straight out of the Scottish highlands and dropped onto the shores of Lake Michigan. High stone walls, glowing gas lanterns, and arched windows dominated the facade. It was magnificent, intimidating, and utterly isolated from the rest of the world.
The Maybach glided to a smooth halt beneath a grand stone portico. The driver hurried around to open the door, but Kaelen waved him off, stepping out himself and offering his hand to help her down.
Elena took his hand, stepping out onto the cobblestone courtyard. The cold lake wind whipped her hair across her face, but the sheer scale of the estate made her feel strangely weightless.
"Welcome to Moretti Manor," Kaelen said, keeping his hand wrapped securely around hers as they walked up the grand stone steps toward the heavy oak double doors.
The doors swung open automatically before they even reached them, revealing a cavernous, two-story foyer lined with dark wood paneling, priceless oil paintings, and a massive crystal chandelier hanging from a vaulted ceiling. An elderly butler in a pristine black suit stood waiting by the grand staircase.
"Good evening, sir. Madam," the butler said with a crisp, formal bow. "Everything has been prepared in the master suite. The veterinarian has already cleared the cat, and he is currently eating salmon in the conservatory."
Elena stared at the butler, then up at Kaelen. "You had a veterinarian check my cat within ten minutes of arriving?"
"Efficiency is everything, Elena," Kaelen smiled faintly, releasing her hand and handing his coat to the butler. He turned back to her, his expression turning serious. "I know this is overwhelming. I know you didn't ask for any of this. But I want you to understand one thing very clearly: under this roof, you are completely safe. No one will ever hurt you, humiliate you, or treat you the way Marcus Whitmore did. Ever again."
His words carried a heavy, absolute finality that sent a shiver straight down Elena’s spine. It wasn't a promise born of romance; it was a vow carved in stone by a man who owned the world and had decided to claim her as his own.
Elena swallowed hard, looking deep into his amber eyes. She had spent her entire life surviving on scraps, fighting for every inch, and picking up the pieces of other people's carelessness.
For the first time in her life, she felt like she didn't have to fight anymore.

"Show me my room," Elena said quietly.
Kaelen’s smile widened, a genuine, warm expression that completely transformed his dangerous face. "Our room, Elena. Welcome home."
