Chapter 4 - The Interrogation Room and the House of CardsThree days later, I lay in a private, high-security recovery suite at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Outside my door, two armed federal marshals stood guard. Inside, my sister Maya sat in the armchair beside my bed, holding my hand while little Lily—our newborn daughter—slept peacefully in the bassinet near the window.

The door opened quietly, and Agent Sarah Sterling stepped into the room. She was the senior federal prosecutor who had spearheaded the task force that rescued me from the basement. She carried a thick leather portfolio and a tablet displaying financial ledgers.

“How are you holding up, Mrs. Carter?” Agent Sterling asked gently, pulling up a chair.

“I’m recovering,” I said, my voice steady. “And I want to make sure my husband never sees the light of day again.”

Sterling offered a grim, satisfied smile. She opened the portfolio and slid several printed documents across the bedside table.

“You won't have to worry about that,” Sterling said. “Marcus’s empire wasn't just built on domestic tyranny—it was built on a foundation of massive federal fraud, international embezzlement, and illegal shell corporations designed to hide millions from regulatory agencies.”

She tapped the tablet screen, bringing up a complex web of financial transactions.

“When our cyber unit seized Marcus’s home servers and personal hard drives, we found something even more interesting. Months ago, Marcus started quietly transferring ownership of all his commercial real estate, restaurant holdings, and luxury accounts into his mother’s name. He was planning to divorce you, strip you of every asset, declare bankruptcy, and leave you with nothing while he fled the country with his mistress.”

My blood ran cold. The affair videos he forced me to watch in the basement weren't just psychological torture; they were part of an exit strategy.

“And the audio files you recovered from the burner phone?” I asked.

“They are the cornerstone of our criminal case,” Sterling replied firmly. “Every threat, every confession, every sadistic detail of how he locked you in that cage and starved you has been transcribed and authenticated by audio forensic experts. Combined with the DNA evidence from the basement, the blood samples on the metal floor, and the testimony of the dinner guests who heard his lies, Marcus is facing a minimum of twenty-five to life without the possibility of parole.”

“What about Eleanor?” Maya asked angrily from the bedside. “She was the warden! She carried the key!”

“Eleanor’s arrogance is her undoing,” Sterling answered smoothly. “She tried to claim during her interrogation that she was acting under duress from Marcus. But we pulled the security footage from the hallway outside the basement door. We have months of footage showing her taunting Elena, pouring water down the drain in front of the cage, and smiling while she turned the key. She’s facing identical conspiracy and torture charges. They’ll be cellmates in federal prison.”
