Chapter 2 - The Upstairs Echoes and the Mother’s ComplicityAs David hauled me out of the cage, wrapping his own tactical jacket around my shivering, blood-soaked body, the muffled sounds of footsteps and polite conversation filtered down from the dining room ceiling.

Upstairs, the dinner guests were still waiting. They were still drinking Marcus’s wine, completely oblivious to the nightmare unfolding in the basement beneath their feet.
“Clear the upper floor!” David shouted into his shoulder mic, his eyes burning with cold rage as he looked up at the ceiling.
Within seconds, the heavy footsteps of backup officers pounded up the basement stairs. Doors upstairs flew open. We heard gasps, dropped silverware, and the sharp, panicking protests of dinner guests being ordered to sit down and keep their hands visible.
And then came a voice that made my blood run colder than the concrete floor.
“What is the meaning of this? Do you know who my son is? How dare you burst into a private dinner party!”
Eleanor Carter—Marcus’s mother—stomped down the stairs, her designer silk dress rustling, her face twisted in righteous, aristocratic fury. She expected to see local cops she could bribe, or intimidated neighbors she could silence with a sharp word.
Instead, she stopped dead halfway down the steps as she saw David holding me in his arms, and Marcus pinned against the wall by two armed federal agents.
Eleanor’s face drained of color in an instant. Her hand instinctively flew to her throat, where the heavy gold chain holding the key to my cage rested against her collarbone.
“Eleanor,” I whispered, my voice shaking with a fury that burned hotter than my labor pains. “You forgot to lock the door today.”
David looked up at the older woman, his expression terrifying. He reached out, his gloved hand catching the gold chain around Eleanor’s neck and snapping it with a sharp jerk. He held up the small, brass key before her wide, terrified eyes.
“Co-conspirator in kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and torture,” David recited coldly, nodding to the agents behind her. “Cuff her. Put her in the second cruiser with her son.”
“You can’t do this!” Eleanor shrieked, thrashing as federal marshals grabbed her arms, dragging her down the steps past the cage she had visited every morning to humiliate me. “My son is a pillar of this community! You’ll pay for this! All of you!”
“You’ve both played your final roles,” David said quietly, turning his back on them as he lifted me into his arms to carry me toward the shattered basement door.
As we emerged into the cool night air, the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen federal vehicles painted the suburban street in violent strokes. An emergency ambulance stood waiting with its doors flung wide, paramedics rushing forward with a gurney.
But as they lifted me onto the stretcher, a brutal contraction ripped through my body, and I screamed out, clutching my stomach.

The paramedic checked my vitals, his face turning pale under the floodlights.
“We’ve got active fetal distress!” the paramedic shouted. “The bleeding is severe—we don't have time to transport her to the hospital. We have to deliver right here!”
