Chapter 5 - Shadows Over Red HookThe salt air of Red Hook hung heavy and damp under a moonless sky. The skeletal remains of the old Maren shipping warehouses loomed against the dark waters of the harbor like jagged teeth, their corrugated iron walls groaning in the offshore wind.

Inside the central warehouse, a single halogen work light cast a harsh, glaring circle of illumination onto the concrete floor.
I stood in the center of that circle wearing a dark wool coat, holding a worn manila envelope containing decoy documents. Behind stacked crates fifty yards away, Adrien and a dozen of his most elite operatives were positioned in total darkness, their weapons drawn and thermal scopes zeroed in on every perimeter access point.
Footsteps echoed sharply across the hollow concrete floor.
From the shadows near the loading dock, Justice Malcolm Vane stepped into the light. He looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression radiating absolute, untouchable arrogance. He wasn't alone. Four armed men in plain black suits flanked him, their hands resting near their holsters.
"Elena," Vane said, stopping ten feet away, his cold eyes scanning the empty expanse of the warehouse. "I must admit, I am disappointed. I expected Mr. Viscari to crawl out from under his rock to protect you."
"Adrien doesn't need to protect me from a coward hiding behind a robe," I replied, my voice steady as I held up the manila envelope. "The ledgers are right here, Judge. Everything you spent twenty years trying to bury."
Vane smiled, a predatory gleam flashing in his eyes. He motioned for one of his men to step forward and retrieve the envelope. "You always were smarter than your mother, my dear. She thought idealism could defeat power. You, at least, understand that survival requires transactions."
"You killed her," I said, taking a step forward, letting the anger I had bottled up for two decades finally break through the ice. "You murdered my mother and father over money. You stole an empire, and you thought you got away with it."
"I did get away with it," Vane chuckled coldly, waving the envelope in the air as his henchman handed it over. "And with these documents destroyed, my federal confirmation is guaranteed. In five years, I’ll sit on the Supreme Court. History is written by the survivors, Elena. And you are about to become a footnote."
"History," a deep, cold voice echoed from the shadows above the loading bay, "is currently being broadcast live to the Senate Ethics Committee and the FBI director's private terminal."
Vane’s face drained of color. He whipped his head around as powerful overhead floodlights suddenly clicked on, blinding everyone in the warehouse.
From the upper gantry and every surrounding exit, Adrien’s men swarmed the floor, their weapons trained directly on Vane’s security detail. Before Vane’s men could even draw their sidearms, Dominic and three operatives disarmed them in a lightning-fast, coordinated sweep, slamming them against the concrete.
Adrien descended the steel staircase slowly, his black coat billowing behind him like the wings of a dark angel. He walked straight past me, stopping inches from Malcolm Vane, who was now trembling with suppressed rage and sheer terror.
"You... you set me up," Vane hissed, looking at the envelope in his hand. He ripped it open, only to find blank sheets of paper inside.
"You didn't really think I'd hand over original evidence to a murderer, did you?" I asked, stepping up beside Adrien. "The federal marshals are already raiding your Manhattan residence, Judge. By sunrise, your assets will be frozen, your confirmation cancelled, and your cell prepared."
Vane lunged forward in a desperate, final act of madness, pulling a small revolver from his coat pocket and aiming it directly at my chest.
Bang.
May you like
Before Vane could pull the trigger, Adrien moved with supernatural speed. A single shot from Adrien’s firearm struck Vane’s wrist, sending the revolver clattering across the concrete floor. Vane screamed, clutching his bleeding hand as Dominic tackled him to the ground, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
The nightmare was over. The man who had stolen my childhood, murdered my parents, and tried to destroy my future was finally in chains.
