Chapter 4 - The Lioness AwakensWhile Alexander and his legal team were dismantling the Robles empire downtown, Elena sat with Sofia in the quiet sanctuary of her Uptown apartment.

The blinds were drawn against the bright Texas sun. A cool, damp cloth rested gently across Sofia’s swollen cheek, and a cup of chamomile tea sat untouched on the coffee table. For hours, Sofia had stared blankly at the wall, replaying the horror of her wedding night over and over in her mind.

Elena pulled up a chair beside the sofa, taking her daughter’s trembling hand into her own.

“Sofia, look at me,” Elena said softly.

Sofia slowly turned her head, her green eyes—so like Alexander’s, yet carrying her own unique warmth—filled with a deep, crushing sorrow.

“Mom, I feel so stupid,” Sofia whispered, a tear slipping down her bruised cheek. “I ignored every warning you gave me. You told me Carmen was looking at our assets, not at me. You told me Javier was too polished, too perfect. And I defended him. I thought love could conquer anything.”

Elena squeezed her hand tightly, her own eyes glistening with unshed tears.

“You are not stupid, my love,” Elena said firmly. “You are kind. You believed in love because you have a good heart. Never punish yourself for expecting basic human decency from someone you trusted.”

Sofia looked down at her bruised arms, clenching her fists. A sudden, fierce spark of anger flashed in her eyes—the exact same fire that had driven Alexander to build his empire from the ground up.

“I don't want to hide anymore, Mom,” Sofia said, her voice growing stronger, steadying with every word. “When Carmen hit me... when she told me a disobedient wife had to be trained... part of me wanted to curl up and disappear. But sitting here today, watching Dad move heaven and earth to protect me... I realized something.”

“What is that?” Elena asked softly.

“I am a Vance,” Sofia said, lifting her chin with quiet, unbreakable resolve. “And I am not going to let a bunch of greedy monsters take my home, my dignity, or my life. I want to face them. I want Carmen to see that she didn't break me.”

Elena felt a profound wave of pride wash over her chest. The little girl she had raised wasn't a victim anymore. She was a survivor.

Just then, the front door unlocked, and Alexander walked into the apartment. He looked tired, his jacket off, his shirtsleeves rolled up, but there was an unmistakable gleam of victory in his eyes.

He walked straight over to the couch, kneeling down beside Sofia just as he had done twelve hours earlier.

“How are you feeling, baby girl?” Alexander asked gently.

Sofia managed a small, brave smile, her lips parting as she looked at her father. “I’m ready, Dad. What’s our next move?”

Alexander pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket and laid it on the coffee table. At the bottom of the page, in shaky, furious handwriting, was the signature: Carmen Robles.

“The empire is ours,” Alexander said quietly. “Now, it’s time to collect.”
