Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm in DallasThe digital clock on the bedside table read 3:42 a.m., but time had lost all meaning the moment Sofia collapsed into Elena’s arms. Outside the window, the neon lights of Dallas blurred behind a sheet of cold, relentless rain, mirroring the chill that had settled deep into Elena’s bones. In the small, quiet living room of her Uptown apartment, the air still smelled of dried blood, torn silk, and the lingering, metallic scent of terror.

Alexander Vance knelt beside the sofa, his massive frame trembling with a suppressed, volcanic fury. The man who had once been one of the most ruthless defense attorneys and real estate magnates in Texas looked like a ghost who had walked straight out of a nightmare. His silver-streaked hair was disheveled, his expensive silk shirt was buttoned crookedly, and his eyes—usually cold, analytical, and calculating—were fixed entirely on the purple, swollen bruises wrapping around his daughter’s arms.
“Who?” Alexander’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the terrifying weight of an avalanche about to break. “Give me their names, Sofia.”
Sofia swallowed hard, her split lip trembling. “Carmen... Carmen Robles. And Javier... he waited outside. He knew, Dad. He told her not to ruin my face for the morning photos.”
Alexander slowly stood up. The silence in the room stretched so tight it felt like a taut wire. Without a single word, he walked over to the kitchen counter where Elena’s phone lay. He picked it up, unlocked it with a familiar swipe, and dialed a direct, ten-digit number.
“Julian? It’s Alexander Vance,” he said, his voice dropping into a tone that made Elena’s breath hitch. “I want every asset, every bank account, every offshore holding, and every real estate deed tied to Carmen and Javier Robles pulled by sunrise. I don't care how you do it. I want their legal standing obliterated before the sun hits the Dallas skyline.”
He hung up before the other person could reply.
Elena crossed her arms, walking over to stand beside him. The last time she had heard Alexander speak with that exact tone was twenty years ago, during their bitter divorce—a divorce forced largely by the constant, poison-laced interference of Alexander’s own elite, controlling mother. She knew that look. It was the look of a man who viewed the world not as a society of laws, but as a chessboard where pieces were meant to be crushed.
“Alexander, they have connections,” Elena warned softly, her voice heavy with caution. “Carmen’s family runs half the commercial real estate syndicates in North Dallas. Javier is tied into the district attorney’s office through his uncle. If we go to war with them openly, they will try to bury Sofia in legal red tape.”
Alexander turned his head, his gaze locking onto Elena’s. For a fleeting second, the walls of bitterness that had kept them apart for a decade seemed to dissolve, replaced by a shared, primal instinct of parental protection.
“Let them try,” Alexander said coldly. “They didn't just mess with a real estate dispute, Elena. They touched my blood. And in this city, nobody survives touching a Vance.”

He looked back down at Sofia, who had pulled her mother’s floral blanket up to her chin, her eyes heavy with exhaustion and shock.
“Rest, baby girl,” Alexander murmured, his voice softening just a fraction. “By the time you wake up, the Robles family won't even own the clothes on their backs.”
