Chapter 5 - The Sacred Vow

The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting a warm, golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Suite 714.

Rowena lay in the center of the massive bed, wrapped in the soft white silk sheets. Her body felt warm, thoroughly claimed, and alive in a way she hadn't felt in years. Beside her, Julian was already awake, leaning against the headboard with a dark velvet robe draped loosely over his broad shoulders, watching her sleep with an expression of absolute, unwavering devotion.

When she opened her eyes, he leaned down and pressed a slow, tender kiss against her forehead.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," Julian whispered smoothly.

A tiny, genuine smile touched Rowena’s lips. "We aren't married yet."

"The paperwork is already at the courthouse," Julian replied, handing her a sleek glass of fresh orange juice from the bedside table. "Our appointment with the judge is at eleven o'clock. And at one o'clock, we are visiting your grandmother."

Rowena sat up instantly, pulling the sheet to her chest, her eyes wide. "Cecile? Is she okay? Did something happen overnight?"

"She had a comfortable night," Julian reassured her, his thumb gently smoothing a crease from her brow. "My personal medical team took over her care at midnight. The best cardiologists in the state are currently adjusting her treatments. She isn't dying today, Rowena. I won't allow it."

Tears pricked the corners of Rowena’s eyes. For six years, she had carried the crushing weight of her life entirely on her own shoulders. Now, this terrifying, powerful man was standing beside her, carrying the weight as if it were lighter than air.

Three hours later, Rowena stood in the private chambers of a federal judge downtown, wearing a simple, breathtaking ivory silk dress that Julian’s personal tailors had delivered to the hotel. Julian stood beside her in an obsidian three-piece suit, his hand firmly holding hers.

"By the power vested in me by the State of Illinois," the judge intoned, signing the final ledger, "I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Julian didn't wait. He pulled Rowena into his arms and kissed her deeply, claiming her lips with a fierce, possessive passion that made the rest of the world fade into background noise.

When they arrived at Northwestern Memorial Hospital an hour later, the atmosphere in Cecile’s room had completely changed. The dim, depressing room was filled with fresh white roses. New monitoring equipment quietly hummed in the corner, and two top specialists were reviewing charts near the window.

Cecile was awake, sitting up in bed, looking more alert than she had in months.

"Rowey?" Cecile rasped, her eyes widening as Rowena walked into the room, followed closely by the towering, formidable presence of Julian Vance.

Rowena hurried to the bedside, falling to her knees and wrapping her hands around her grandmother’s. "Grandma. I want you to meet someone."

Julian stepped forward, bowing his head with deep, genuine respect before the elderly woman. "Mrs. Carter. My name is Julian Vance. I am Rowena’s husband."

Cecile stared at Julian, her sharp, perceptive eyes scanning his expensive suit, his fierce jawline, and the absolute authority radiating from him. Then, she looked at Rowena’s glowing face, noting the gold band gleaming on her finger.

"Husband?" Cecile whispered, a faint, triumphant smile spreading across her frail lips. "And what about that spineless boy, Dylan?"

"Handled, Mrs. Carter," Julian said smoothly, taking Rowena’s hand and bringing it to his lips. "Permanently."

May you like

Cecile let out a soft, dry laugh, her hand tightening around Rowena’s. "Good. You look like a man who knows how to keep his promises, Mr. Vance."

"I hold my vows above life itself," Julian replied firmly.
