Chapter 5 - The Basement ConfessionThe lower basement vault of the Gloucester estate was a windowless room built for interrogations, smelling of damp stone and old iron.

Arthur Cole, a middle-aged man with thinning gray hair and an expensive Italian suit, sat tied securely to a heavy metal chair. Two of Damian’s guards stood like statues on either side of him. Cole was shaking violently, sweat beading on his forehead as the heavy steel door creaked open.

Damian walked in first, his shadow stretching long across the concrete floor. Vivien followed right behind him, unable to stay away, needing to see the man who had turned her quiet life into a battlefield.

"Arthur," Damian said softly, pulling up a steel stool and sitting directly in front of the captive. "Seven years ago, you told me Vivien drowned off the coast of Maine. You handed me a forged death certificate and a burner phone with a digital trail leading nowhere."

Cole whimpered, shrinking back against the chair. "Mr. Duca... I had no choice! Maro’s men had my son! They threatened to kill my family if I didn't help them push Vivien out of your life!"

"And today?" Damian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Who threatened your family today when you sent our GPS coordinates to Maro's hit squad?"

"I needed money!" Cole sobbed, breaking down completely. "The real estate investments went south, Maro offered me two million dollars to clear my debts if I gave him your route out of Boston! I didn't know they would try to kill her at the diner! I swear to God, I just thought you'd move her somewhere else!"

Vivien stared at the man in horror. Two million dollars. Her entire life—her quiet mornings, her daughter's school, her fragile sense of safety—had been traded on a black-market ledger for two million dollars.

Damian stood up slowly. He drew his pistol, the metallic click echoing off the concrete walls like a death knell. He cocked the hammer, pointing the barrel straight at Cole’s forehead.

"Damian, stop!" Vivien cried out, rushing forward and grabbing his gun hand, forcing the barrel down toward the floor.

Damian looked at her, stunned. "He put a target on your back, Vivien. Twice."

"I know," she said, her voice shaking, tears streaming down her face, but her eyes burning with fierce conviction. "He’s a criminal, and he belongs in a federal prison cell where he can rot for the rest of his life. But if you pull that trigger, you become the monster Maro wants you to be. You become the reason Lily can't ever look at her father without seeing blood on his hands."

Damian stared into her eyes. The silence in the vault stretched for an eternity. The tension in his shoulders was palpable, a lifetime of brutal conditioning fighting against the raw, desperate desire to protect the woman standing before him.

Slowly, deliberately, Damian lowered the hammer and clicked the safety back on. He holstered the weapon.

He turned to Marcus. "Hand him over to the federal marshals in the morning with a full evidence package of his treason. Let a judge bury him."
