Chapter 6 - The Cleansing FireWith my position at the council table secured, the real work began.

We didn't just purge Marcus Vance; we systematically dismantled every rotten root he had planted within the syndicate over the past decade. For three weeks, the city of Chicago hummed with suppressed violence as Maso’s strike teams swept through corrupt warehouses, seized contraband, and cut ties with the rogue factions trying to exploit our brief moment of internal weakness.
Victor Cruz—the rival boss who had been backing Marcus—tried to launch a desperate retaliatory strike against our downtown financial hubs. He thought we were distracted, vulnerable, and divided.
He miscalculated.
On a freezing Friday night, standing in the high-security command center of the Romano tower, I watched the live tactical feeds on our wall monitors. Cruz’s convoy had attempted to ambush our primary cash transit vehicles near the industrial district.
What they didn't know was that I had personally rewritten the route algorithms three days prior, turning the transport trucks into a rolling honeytrap.
"They're walking right into the box," Maso reported calmly from the communications console, his radio crackling with synchronized chatter from our tactical squads.
"Close the trap," I ordered, resting my hands on the edge of the glass console. "Leave no survivors."
Within twenty minutes, the ambush was over. Cruz’s forces were completely neutralized, their assets frozen, and Cruz himself captured alive to be brought before the council for a final, public accounting.
Alessandro walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin gently on my shoulder. The tension that had defined our marriage for years was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, unbreakable partnership forged in fire and blood.
"You realize," Alessandro murmured against my ear, "that the other families are going to start calling you the Black Queen."
"Let them," I replied, leaning back against his chest. "Fear is a much better deterrent than a pretty smile."
"True," he chuckled softly, turning me around so I was facing him. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box—not the old family heirloom ring, but a brand-new, custom-designed band studded with black diamonds and platinum filigree, crafted with my father's old tools.
"What is this?" I asked, looking up at him.
"An apology," Alessandro said softly, sliding the new ring onto my finger beside my wedding band. "And a renewal of vows. The old Elena died the night of your birthday, and good riddance. I want a partnership with the woman standing here now. If you'll still have me."
I looked at the brilliant black diamonds catching the light of the command center. I looked into his eyes and saw no secrets, no hidden agendas—only absolute, uncompromising devotion.

"Only if you promise never to bring a decoy girlfriend to my birthday party again," I teased.
"Deal," he smiled, pulling me into a deep, fierce kiss that sealed our new empire.
