Chapter 1 - The Blood-Stained ReturnThe morning sun cut through the dusty blinds of the apartment above my father's old Little Italy jewelry shop, casting long

I had refused to give him the satisfaction of tears. I had slipped the heavy gold band from my finger, pressed it into the stranger's shaking palm, and walked away into the dark night. I thought I was free. I thought I had closed that chapter of blood, power, and calculated cruelty forever.

Then came the heavy, urgent rap on my apartment door.

It wasn't a casual knock. It was the synchronized, heavy double-tap of men trained in tactical entry.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I grabbed a heavy steel jeweler’s hammer from the tray, tiptoeing across the worn floorboards. When I pulled the door open, the breath caught in my throat.

Standing in the narrow hallway were Maso, Alessandro’s chief enforcer and shadow, and Dr. Leah Ferraro, the syndicate's trusted underground surgeon. Neither of them looked like they had slept in a week. Maso’s sharp suit was stained with soot and dark splatters, and Leah’s eyes were bloodshot behind her wire-rimmed glasses.

"Step aside, Elena," Maso said, his voice unusually raw, devoid of its usual clinical detachment.

"If you're here to drag me back to the lake house, save your breath," I said, raising the hammer slightly. "I'm done playing the dutiful mafia wife."

"We aren't here to take you back," Leah interjected, pushing past Maso with an expression of grim exhaustion. She looked at me not with the cold indifference of the criminal underworld, but with deep, agonizing panic. "We're here because you’re the only person left he won’t kill on sight."

Maso didn't argue. He reached slowly into the inside pocket of his ruined jacket, pulled out a small, velvet-lined pouch, and placed it gently onto my workbench beside my diamond-setting tools.

He uncinched the drawstring and tipped it forward.

My wedding ring rolled out onto the scarred wood.

The polished gold was caked in dark, tacky, half-dried blood. A chilling wave of nausea washed over me.

"Whose blood is that?" I whispered, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady.

"Not his," Maso said grimly, running a hand through his sweat-dampened hair. "At least, not entirely. Someone breached the inner vault at the primary docks three hours ago. A professional hit. They targeted the girl Alessandro brought to your party—her name was Clara. They executed her in the back of the safehouse, and they left your ring resting on her chest like a signature."

My breath hitched. The terrified girl with the fading bruise under her makeup. She hadn't been Alessandro’s new mistress. She had been a message.

"Why bring it to me?" I demanded, staring at the crimson-stained gold. "If Alessandro thinks I'm involved—"

"Alessandro isn't thinking clearly," Leah interrupted sharply, stepping closer. "He went completely feral. He tore apart three blocks of warehouse district looking for the crew that did it. But the evidence points inside our own inner circle, Elena. Someone on the board betrayed him. And they used your ring to frame you for the leak."

The trap snapped shut in my mind with terrifying clarity. By walking out with dignity, I had left behind a vacuum. Someone within the Romano syndicate wanted a war, and they were using my public exit to make me look like the scorned, vengeful ex-wife who sold out her husband's operations to rival families.

Maso looked me dead in the eye, his massive frame tense with desperation. "The council is voting to brand you a traitor by sunset. If Alessandro finds you before we find the real mole, his grief will override his logic, and he’ll put a bullet in you himself. But if you help us crack the encryption on Clara’s phone... we might just survive the night."
