Chapter 6 - The Gathering StormThree weeks passed in a blur of quiet recovery inside the mountain sanctuary.

The autumn chill of the Cuyahoga Valley had deepened into the crisp, sparkling beauty of early winter. Snow dusted the pine branches outside the cabin windows, but inside, the hearth was warm, bright, and filled with the gentle cooing of a healthy, growing infant.
The fallout from the federal raid on Aexis Global Capital had been swift, historic, and absolute. The executives who had ordered the hit on Logan and hunted his family down at St. Jude Memorial were arrested within forty-haar hours, their connections to the corporate conspiracy thoroughly exposed by the data Dr. Wright had unleashed. While Logan could never be brought back, his name was officially cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, cementing his legacy not as a runaway fugitive, but as the brave whistleblower who brought down a corrupt corporate empire.
However, safety in the mountains did not mean complete isolation from the outside world.
One afternoon, as Dr. Wright was checking a secure communications channel at his desk, a heavy knock echoed through the cabin.
Joanna froze, her heart skipping a beat. She clutched little Logan a little tighter against her chest, her eyes darting toward the heavy steel door.
"Don't worry," Dr. Wright said calmly, standing up from his desk and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "No one knows this location except federal authorities under direct protection orders. Let me handle it."
He walked over to the entryway, peering through the reinforced security peephole before unlocking the heavy deadbolts.
The door swung open to reveal a tall, distinguished man in a dark trench coat, accompanied by two federal agents in civilian suits. It wasn't an assassin. It was Director Miller of the FBI’s White-Collar Crime Division.
"Dr. Wright," Director Miller said, stepping inside and brushing the melting snowflakes from his shoulders. "I apologize for the unannounced visit, but we needed to deliver some final paperwork in person."
"Director Miller," Dr. Wright nodded, gesturing toward the living area. "Please, come in out of the cold. Ms. Parker is resting."
"I'm awake," Joanna said softly, stepping out from the hallway with baby Logan sleeping peacefully in her arms. She looked at the federal official with cautious curiosity. "What paperwork?"
Director Miller offered a warm, professional smile. He reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick, official government dossier, placing it gently on the wooden coffee table.
"First of all, Ms. Parker, I want to formally commend you," Director Miller said. "The data your late partner, Logan Wright, secured and transmitted through Dr. Wright has allowed us to dismantle one of the largest corporate syndicates in the country. Recovered assets from the seizure are currently being funneled into a federal restitution and whistleblower protection fund."
Joanna blinked, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. "So... Logan's name is cleared?"
"Completely," Director Miller confirmed. "In the eyes of the law, he is recognized as a hero. Furthermore, because of the threats made against you and your newborn son at the hospital, the federal government has established a permanent protective trust in the child's name, funded by the seized assets of Aexis Global. You and your son will never have to worry about financial security again."
Joanna looked down at little Logan, a profound wave of relief washing over her. The nightmare was truly over. The ghosts of the past could finally rest.
"And the men who attacked the hospital?" Dr. Wright asked sharply.
"All apprehended," Miller replied. "They're facing multiple counts of conspiracy, attempted kidnapping, and domestic terrorism. They'll never see the light of day again."
Director Miller paused, looking between the aging doctor and the young mother. "There is one final matter. The civil guardianship and custody filings. Since Logan is deceased, the court has processed the expedited grandfather petition filed by Dr. Wright. Legally, you are both recognized as joint guardians of the child."
Joanna looked up, meeting Dr. Wright’s warm, tear-bright eyes. The man who had once been a stranger—a symbol of the pain Logan ran from—had become her greatest protector, her family, and a loving grandfather to her son.

"Thank you, Director," Joanna whispered.
After a few more moments of administrative formalities, the federal agents departed, leaving the cabin once again wrapped in the peaceful silence of the mountains.
