Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary in the WoodsThe Cuyahoga Valley was shrouded in a thick, eerie autumn fog by the time Dr. Wright’s sedan turned down an unmarked, unpaved logging road hidden deep behind a dense canopy of ancient oaks and pines.

For forty-five grueling minutes, they had driven in tense, suffocating silence, constantly checking the rearview mirror for headlights. But the winding, muddy trails had successfully thrown off any immediate pursuers.

The car finally crunched to a halt in front of a rustic, heavily fortified timber cabin tucked against the slope of a steep hillside. Heavy steel storm shutters covered the windows, and a high-tech satellite communications dome sat quietly on the sloping tin roof.

"We're here," Dr. Wright announced, cutting the engine.

He hurried around to the passenger side, helping a shivering Joanna out of the vehicle and carrying the sleeping infant inside.

The interior of the cabin was surprisingly warm, spacious, and modern. A stone fireplace crackled with a bright, welcoming blaze, casting dancing amber light across walls lined with bookshelves, medical equipment, and old family photographs.

Joanna sank into an oversized leather armchair near the fire, pulling the heavy wool sweater tightly around her shoulders as the immense exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours finally caught up with her in a crushing wave.

Dr. Wright quickly prepared a sterile formula bottle, warming it over a small gas stove before handing it to Joanna, who gently fed her son. The baby suckled greedily, completely oblivious to the fact that he was the center of an international corporate manhunt.

"He needs a name," Dr. Wright said softly, standing a few feet away with a cup of black coffee in his hands, watching the mother and child with an expression of quiet reverence.

Joanna looked down at the tiny face, tracing the soft curve of his cheek with her finger. She remembered the stormy night she had told Logan she was pregnant, and the fierce, protective love in his eyes before he vanished into the dark.

"Logan Jr.," Joanna whispered, her voice steady and resolute. "His name is Logan."

A slow, emotional smile touched the old doctor's lips. He nodded, looking down at his worn wedding band once more. "Logan. I think... I think my son would have been very proud."

"What happens now, Dr. Wright?" Joanna asked, raising her hazel eyes to meet his. "We can't hide out in the woods forever. Those men... they're ruthless. They won't just give up."

"They won't have to look for us," Dr. Wright replied, walking over to a secure satellite terminal built into a heavy oak desk in the corner of the room. He flipped a series of toggle switches, powering up a glowing computer monitor. "Because as we speak, the flash drive Logan mailed to me three weeks ago—the one containing all the financial records of their illegal embezzlement ring—is being automatically uploaded to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the FBI's white-collar crime division, and three major investigative news outlets."

Joanna’s eyes widened in disbelief. "You uploaded it?"

"Just before we left the hospital," Dr. Wright said, typing a rapid sequence of commands into the terminal. "The moment that data goes public, the executives funding those mercenaries are going to have bigger problems than tracking down a newborn baby. Their entire global empire is about to implode."

As if on cue, the computer terminal chimed sharply, displaying a live news broadcast feed from a national financial network.

The banner scrolling across the bottom of the screen read:

BREAKING NEWS: FEDERAL RAID UNDERWAY AT AEXIS GLOBAL CAPITAL. TOP EXECUTIVES DETAINED AMID MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT PROBE.

Joanna stared at the screen in stunned silence. The invisible cage that had trapped Logan, terrorized their lives, and turned her pregnancy into a nightmare was finally being smashed to pieces.

Dr. Wright let out a long, ragged breath, leaning his hands against the desk as the remaining tension finally drained from his shoulders.

"It's over," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "We won."
