Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the EliteThree days following the successful surgery, Richard Sterling was successfully extubated in the cardiovascular intensive care unit, his cognitive functions intact and his vital signs stabilizing within normal parameters. Standing beside his bed as the morning sunlight filtered through the private recovery suite windows, I reviewed his post-op telemetry data while Arthur Sterling watched from a leather armchair in the corner.

“You saved his life, Althia,” Arthur said quietly, standing up to adjust his tie. “And in doing so, you’ve fundamentally rewritten the power structure of this institution.”

Before I could answer, the heavy wooden door of the suite burst open. Preston rushed into the room, looking haggard, unshaven, and frantic, his designer suit wrinkled from days of sleeping on lobby couches. Behind him stood Cecily Blair, looking visibly uncomfortable, clutching a designer handbag like a shield. “Dad!” Preston gasped, rushing toward the bedside. “Thank God—I heard you woke up—”

Before Preston could touch his father’s arm, two private security guards stepped smoothly into his path, crossing their arms with immovable authority. “Mr. Sterling, you are in direct violation of the restricted visitation protocol established by the board and the medical director,” the lead guard stated neutrally.

Preston spun around, his face flushed with frantic rage, pointing a shaking finger directly at me. “This is insane! She is doing this out of spite! Althia, tell them to let me see my own father! You’re weaponizing his medical care just because—”

“Because you married my best friend behind my back while pretending to book our wedding?” I asked calmly, turning around from the monitor to face him directly for the first time since my return.

The entire room went dead silent. Richard Sterling, weak but fully alert against the elevated pillows, slowly turned his head toward his son, his eyes narrowing with icy disbelief. “You did what?” Richard’s voice was a gravelly, authoritative rasp.

Preston stammered, all his arrogant corporate bluster instantly evaporating into thin air. “Dad... it was... it was complicated... Cecily and I—”

“Get out,” Richard commanded, pointing a trembling hand toward the door with absolute finality. “Both of you. Get out of my sight, out of this hospital, and off the corporate board properties before I have security throw you into the street.”

Cecily burst into tears, turning on her heel and fleeing down the corridor, while Preston stood frozen, realizing that his attempt to secure both an inheritance and a mistress had resulted in total, irreversible financial and familial ruin.
