Chapter 3 - The Boardroom UltimatumBy the time my flight landed in Zurich twelve hours later, the shockwaves of my refusal had already shattered the fragile composure of the Sterling medical empire.

Preston, realizing his emotional appeals had failed, had escalated the situation to the hospital board, attempting to invoke emergency medical intervention clauses to compel my return. But international medical law and my independent contractor status with the European cardiovascular consortium protected my autonomy. I checked into a quiet boutique hotel overlooking Lake Zurich, turning off my personal phone and utilizing only a secure encrypted line for emergency consultations.

That evening, a knock echoed at my hotel door. Standing in the hallway was Arthur Sterling, Richard’s ruthless older brother and the chairman of the corporate board, who had flown private across the Atlantic just to find me. Looking exhausted and desperate, Arthur bypassed pleasantries the moment I opened the door. “Althia,” he said heavily, stepping inside without an invitation. “Name your terms. The board will sign whatever financial indemnity or research endowment you want, but you need to get on a private charter back to New York tonight. Richard is dying, and Preston is completely paralyzed by panic.” I poured myself a cup of herbal tea, walked slowly to the window, and looked out at the dark waters of the lake before turning to face the most feared executive in American healthcare. “Your nephew made his bed, Arthur,” I replied calmly. “And right now, he and Cecily can lie in it together. If you want my hands in that operating room, the terms won't be financial. They will be structural.”
