Chapter 5 - Behind Bars and Broken GlassThe holding cell at the Manhattan precinct smelled of industrial disinfectant, old rust, and absolute despair.

For forty-eight hours, I sat on a thin plastic mattress, wearing a coarse orange jumpsuit that didn't fit my frame, staring at the concrete block wall across from me. My bespoke charcoal suit was locked in a property bag downstairs; my gold watch, my wedding ring—which I had stubbornly kept wearing until they cut it off my finger—and my wallet filled with useless credit cards were gone.

The bail hearing had been a disaster. Without liquid capital, with my primary assets frozen under receivership, and with Victoria Sterling presenting an airtight federal indictment, the judge had denied bail entirely as a high flight risk.

I was facing ten to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary.

On the third morning, a guard rattled my cell bars with a heavy iron key ring.

"Blackwood! Visitor in room four. Move!"

I stood up sluggishly, my muscles aching from the cold concrete, and shuffled down the sterile hallway behind the guard. I expected my defense attorney, hoping against hope that he had found some loophole, some technicality, some miracle to spring me from this hell.

Instead, when I pushed open the heavy steel door of the visitation booth and sat down behind the smudged plexiglass divider, the person sitting on the other side wasn't Harrison Sterling.

It was Elena.

She looked radiant. Wearing a tailored camel-hair coat over a silk blouse, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders, she looked like a queen surveying a conquered province.

I pressed my palms against the glass, my voice trembling as I spoke into the telephone receiver.

"Elena... please," I choked out, the humiliation burning my throat like acid. "Please, I’m begging you. Drop the criminal charges. Tell your lawyers to settle the civil suit. I’ll sign over everything—every cent, every property, every share. Just... let me see my son. Let me come home."

Elena picked up her receiver slowly. Her green eyes—eyes that used to look at me with absolute adoration and unwavering faith—were now as cold and clear as mountain ice.

"You don't have anything left to sign over, Julian," she said, her voice calm, measured, and utterly devoid of emotion. "The courts already executed the asset forfeiture. E.V. Capital now owns one hundred percent of Blackwood Holdings. Your accounts are seized. Your offshore trusts have been dismantled. You are legally, financially, and personally bankrupt."

"Why?" I sobbed, tears finally breaking free and streaming down my cheeks. "Why destroy me completely, Elena? We had a life together... I made mistakes, yes, but—"

"Mistakes?" Elena interrupted, her voice finally sharpening with a flash of white-hot steel. "You didn't make mistakes, Julian. You made choices. Every single day for five years, you chose to lie. You chose to treat me like an unpaid servant while you funded luxury lives for women who meant nothing. And worse—you treated my son, our son, as an afterthought while you played the great corporate titan."

She leaned closer to the glass, her gaze piercing straight through me.

"When you walked out of that hospital room while I was bleeding, when you left me alone with a newborn baby while you flew to Aspen with Isabel—that was the exact second you ceased to be my husband," she continued, her tone dropping into a lethal whisper. "I didn't destroy you, Julian. I just stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own arrogance."

"Harrison..." I choked out. "Can I... will I ever see Harrison again?"

"When he is old enough to understand what a parasite looks like, I will show him your photograph so he knows what to avoid," Elena replied coldly.

She placed her phone back on its cradle, stood up smoothly, smoothed down her coat, and turned away without looking back once.

"Elena! Elena, wait!" I screamed, slamming my fist against the plexiglass until the guard grabbed my shoulder and dragged me backward toward the door.

May you like

The heavy steel door slammed shut.

I was alone in the dark.
