Chapter 4 - The Mirage of IsabelDesperate, humiliated, and stripped of my financial liquidity, I drove straight from the courthouse to the luxury Manhattan penthouse I had purchased for Isabel in Tribeca.

My hands shook as I punched the security code into the private elevator pad. The doors slid open to reveal a sprawling, sunlit loft filled with designer furniture, modern art, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Hudson River.

"Isabel!" I called out, tossing my car keys onto the marble kitchen island. "Isabel, where are you?"

Silence.

I walked down the hallway toward the master bedroom, pushing open the double doors.

The king-size bed was neatly made. The walk-in closet doors stood wide open.

Empty.

Designer shoes, Chanel bags, custom fur coats, diamond jewelry I had bought her—everything was gone. Not a single trace of her existence remained in the apartment, save for a single piece of heavy cardstock resting squarely on the center of the bed.

I walked over, picked it up, and read the handwritten note:

Julian,

If you’re reading this, it means the court case went as badly as my lawyer predicted. When I started seeing you, you were a billionaire tech and real estate titan who promised me the world. Now you’re a frozen-asset liability facing federal fraud charges and a vengeful ex-wife who just seized your entire corporate empire.

Don't call me. Don't text me. My new fiancé—who actually controls his own money—sends his regards.

Isabel.

The paper fluttered from my limp fingers, drifting down to land softly on the hardwood floor.

I stood there in the center of the empty penthouse, the reality of my complete, total isolation finally crashing down upon my skull.

My family was gone. My son was gone. My empire was gone. My mistress had abandoned me the second the money stopped flowing. I had spent years believing I was the smartest man in any room, that my web of lies and financial engineering made me invincible.

Instead, I had woven a cocoon of isolation, and now I was trapped inside it to die.

My phone rang—a harsh, jarring sound that cut through the quiet loft.

I picked it up, seeing an unknown number on the screen. I swiped to answer, my voice hollow.

"Hello?"

"Mr. Blackwood," a deep, gravelly voice spoke. "This is Detective Miller, New York City Police Department, Financial Crimes Division. We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding wire fraud, corporate forgery, and unauthorized asset concealment. You are instructed to surrender yourself to the downtown precinct within two hours, or federal marshals will execute the warrant at your current location."

May you like

The phone slipped from my ear, clattering against the floor.

I didn't run. I didn't fight. I simply sank slowly down onto the edge of the empty bed, burying my face in my hands as the first true, burning tears of my life began to fall.
