Chapter 4 - The Manhattan ICU and the Hidden LedgerBy midnight, Grace was admitted to a secure, private wing of St. Jude’s Hospital in Manhattan, surrounded by armed private security guards and a team of top-tier maternal-fetal specialists.

I sat in the leather armchair beside her hospital bed, watching the rise and fall of her chest. She had finally fallen into a deep, medicated sleep, her face pale but peaceful, the IV lines snaking into her arms delivering the vital nutrients and fluids she had been denied for months.
My phone buzzed violently against the mahogany side table.
It was Maya Collins, my chief legal counsel and corporate fixer.
“Julian,” Maya’s voice came through the receiver, sharp and analytical. “I’m reviewing the estate’s corporate registry and trust architectures like you asked. You need to see this immediately.”
“What is it, Maya?” I rubbed my tired eyes, the adrenaline of the rescue finally giving way to a bone-deep exhaustion.
“Your mother didn't just lock Grace away out of some twisted aristocratic prejudice,” Maya said, her tone dropping into a grave register. “She was systematically liquidating Grace’s personal assets and rerouting your offshore trust dividends into a private shell company registered under her own maiden name. She planned this months before you left for overseas.”
My jaw tightened so hard a muscle ticked in my cheek. “A shell company? How?”
“Forged power-of-attorney documents,” Maya explained. “She used your signature stamp from your home office while you were traveling, claiming you authorized the asset transfer. More importantly, Julian… I found an internal memo from the estate’s security archives dated three days after you left for Europe.”
“Go on.”
“It details a wire transfer of five million dollars from your mother’s private accounts to an offshore medical facility in Zurich,” Maya paused. “Specifically, a facility specializing in closed-adoption brokerage and infant relocation services.”
The blood rushed in my ears. The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow.
My mother hadn't just intended to keep Grace locked away until she gave birth; she had planned to steal our child the second he took his first breath, ship him overseas, and tell me Grace had died during childbirth or abandoned us in the night.
“She was going to sell my son,” I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

“She was executing a total corporate and familial erasure,” Maya confirmed. “I’ve already filed an emergency injunction freezing all estate assets, revoking your mother’s signing authority, and securing a federal search warrant for the estate’s private archives. But Julian… your mother isn't going to go down quietly. She’s calling in favors from your father’s old associates. You need to be extremely careful.”
“Let them come,” I said coldly, looking over at Grace, who stirred slightly in her sleep, her hand twitching as if searching for mine. “I survived the cartels. I survived the underground wars. But anyone who touches my wife or my son doesn't deserve to breathe the same air.”
