Chapter 1 - The Shadows Beneath the EstateThe damp air inside the subterranean prison cell clung to my skin like a shroud, smelling of ancient stone, stale sweat, and the coppery tang of recent suffering. When the frail, broken whisper of my name cut through the absolute darkness, my entire body went rigid.

“Julian…?”
The voice was so thin, so starved of life, that it sounded less like my wife and more like an echo bouncing off the reinforced concrete walls.
I whipped around, dropping violently to my knees as I reached blindly into the black alcove near the bolted hospital bed. My trembling fingers brushed against an arm that felt terrifyingly skeletal, skin stretched tight over bone. I pulled her gently toward the faint, flickering corridor light that spilled through the splintered frame of the steel door.
As her face finally emerged from the shadows, the breath vanished completely from my lungs. The radiant, glowing woman I had kissed goodbye in the courtyard six months ago—the woman who had laughed with joy as our son kicked against her palm—was entirely gone. In her place sat a ghost. Her dark hair was matted and tangled, her cheeks hollow, and her eyes bruised and sunken with a terror that transcended physical pain. She wore a stained, oversized hospital gown that hung loosely over shoulders too sharp to belong to a living person.
Yet, beneath the wreckage of her physical state, her eyes burned with an instinctual, animalistic panic.
“Julian… you came back,” she sobbed, her fingers clawing desperately into my forearms with a sudden surge of adrenaline. “Your mother… she told me you traded us away. She said you chose the cartels over our family. She said you weren't coming back for us.”
“It was a lie, Grace,” I choked out, the words tearing past my throat like glass as I pulled her carefully against my chest, mindful of her massive, nine-month-pregnant belly. My tears fell hot into her tangled hair. “It was all a lie. My mother orchestrated every single piece of this nightmare.”
Behind me, the heavy steel frame of the secret door groaned. The crisp, rhythmic click of expensive heels echoed down the stone corridor.
“Julian!” My mother’s voice rang out, sharp, cold, and entirely devoid of remorse. “I see you found your little distraction. Step out of that filth right now before you make a mistake you can never take back.”
Grace flinched violently at the sound, curling inward like a bruised flower, her hands flying protectively over her stomach.
“She’s going to take him, Julian,” Grace whispered frantically, her voice pitching in sheer horror. “She said… she said an heir to the estate can't be born to a nobody like me. She said she was going to give our son to a proper family the moment he was born.”

A bottomless, primal rage surged through my veins—a fury so absolute it burned away every trace of the obedient son I had been for thirty years. I kissed Grace’s forehead, whispered a silent vow written in blood, and stood up.
I stepped out of the hidden room, slammed the shattered steel door shut behind me, and turned to face the monster who had birthed me.
