Chapter 3: The Purge of the Estate and the Midnight Delivery

My mother cursed my name, screaming obscenities as Salvatore and two guards hoisted her off her feet and dragged her screaming down the corridor, her high heels scraping uselessly against the stone. But I had no time to bask in the victory; a sharp, terrifying cry echoed from the open doorway of the prison room behind me. Grace was curled into a tight ball on the mattress, her hands clutched around her stomach, her face contorted in sheer agony. "Dante... oh, God... the baby... he’s coming! The stress... I think I'm going into labor!" she screamed, a pool of dark blood beginning to soak through her torn hospital gown. Panic—raw, blinding panic that I had never felt in all my years of gang warfare—seized my heart. I dropped to my knees beside her, scooping her light, fragile body into my arms as if she were made of spun glass. "I've got you, Grace. I'm right here. You're safe now," I choked out, rushing out of the subterranean dungeon while shouting for our private medical team.

Within minutes, our estate’s state-of-the-art emergency medical suite—which my mother had secretly repurposed into a torture chamber—was transformed back into a fully operational trauma delivery room under the frantic direction of Dr. Marcus Vance, our trusted family physician who had been kept locked in his quarters under armed guard by my mother ever since he questioned Grace’s disappearance. Dr. Vance worked with surgical speed, cutting away the ruined clothes and setting up emergency IV lines while Grace screamed in agonizing pain through her contractions. I sat right beside her on the edge of the operating table, holding her ice-cold hand, pressing my forehead against hers, whispering endless prayers and promises into her ear. "Breathe with me, my love. Push for me. Our son is waiting," I begged, my own eyes burning with hot, unhedged tears. Outside the reinforced glass windows of the medical suite, the violent midnight thunderstorm raged across Manhattan, lightning flashing across the sky like artillery fire as the battle for our family’s survival reached its climax.

For two agonizing hours, the room was filled with the sounds of medical alarms, Dr. Vance’s crisp, urgent commands, and Grace’s fierce, unbroken screams of determination. She fought like a tigress, channeling every ounce of pain, betrayal, and survival instinct into bringing our child into the world. Finally, at exactly 3:42 AM, amidst the blinding flashes of lightning, a sharp, resonant, beautiful cry pierced the sterile air of the operating room. Dr. Vance let out a loud, breathless laugh of sheer relief, holding up a tiny, kicking infant boy covered in life’s sweet crimson and wrapping him instantly in a warm, sterile blue blanket. "Congratulations, Don Dante, Signora Grace—you have a healthy, strong baby boy," the doctor announced, tears of joy streaming down his weathered cheeks. He placed the crying infant directly onto Grace’s chest. Grace let out a long, shuddering sob of pure ecstasy, looking down at our son with eyes full of infinite love. I kissed her lips, feeling the heavy, suffocating darkness lift off the Rossi estate at last. We had survived the nightmare. But the war for our future was only just beginning.
