Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the WolvesBy eight fifteen, the thunderstorm that had been brewing over the Hudson River finally broke, hammering against the grand glass windows of our living room with torrential fury.

I sat calmly on the leather sofa near the marble fireplace, wearing an elegant black silk evening dress. A glass of sparkling mineral water rested on the coaster beside me.
On the coffee table sat two distinct items: the video file from my phone queued up on an iPad screen, and a stack of notarized corporate audit printouts pulled directly from Julian’s safe.
Upstairs, the pounding on the master bathroom door had finally ceased thirty minutes ago. Julian had likely realized that shouting himself hoarse was useless against solid oak and commercial brass deadbolts. He was trapped, wet, shivering in a towel beside a terrified housekeeper, waiting for someone to unlock the door.
At eight twenty-five, headlight beams cut through the rain outside, illuminating the grand driveway.
I didn't stand up. I watched through the floor-to-ceiling windows as three luxury vehicles pulled up to the front portico: Beatrice’s black Mercedes sedan, Natalie’s Range Rover, and Uncle Richard’s Bentley.
They stepped out under large black umbrellas, wearing formal evening attire, clearly believing they were attending a high-society anniversary celebration where they would quietly celebrate another successful step in stripping my family’s trust.
The heavy front door clicked open.
Beatrice walked in first, wearing a tailored navy silk suit and her signature pearl necklace. Following close behind was Natalie, wrapped in a mink coat, and Uncle Richard, holding a leather briefcase that I knew contained the final signature pages for the Apex Holdings restructuring.
"Harper, darling!" Beatrice announced smoothly, her heels clicking across the foyer marble. "What an absolute storm outside! We came as quickly as we could. Where is Julian? He isn't answering his cell phone."
I leaned back against the leather sofa, taking a slow sip of my water. "Julian is currently indisposed upstairs, Beatrice. He’s taking a prolonged bath."
Natalie let out a dramatic, condescending sigh, removing her mink coat and tossing it over the entryway bench. "Honestly, Harper, calling a family meeting on a Tuesday night during a torrential downpour? We were in the middle of dinner at the club. What is this 'anniversary surprise' you were babbling about on the phone?"
Uncle Richard adjusted his gold spectacles, his eyes darting toward the closed door of Julian’s private study with an unnatural, twitchy focus. "Yes, Harper. If this is about the Q3 dividend distributions from Caldwell Global, I brought the standard board documentation for you to sign off on."
I looked at the three of them standing in my living room.
For ten years, I had hosted their Thanksgiving dinners, funded their private club memberships, organized their birthday galas, and treated them like my own flesh and blood. And every single time they had smiled at me across a dinner table, they had been calculating how much longer they needed to pretend to like me before they could take everything my father had worked his entire life to build.
"Put the briefcase on the table, Richard," I said softly.
Richard frowned, stepping forward. "Excuse me?"
"You heard me," I said, my voice dropping into a register that made all three of them freeze in their tracks. "Put the briefcase on the table, take off your coats, and sit down."
Beatrice’s polite smile faltered. Her dark eyes narrowed into sharp, dangerous slits. "Harper, I don't know what kind of game you think you're playing, but your tone is entirely unacceptable. Where is my son?"
"Your son is locked inside the master bathroom," I replied calmly. "Along with Mia."
The living room went dead, breathless silent.
Natalie blinked, a nervous, high-pitched laugh escaping her lips. "Mia? The housekeeper? What on earth are you talking about?"
"She means the twenty-year-old girl Julian has been sleeping with for the past four months," I corrected, picking up the iPad from the coffee table and pressing play.
The high-definition video instantly echoed through the cavernous living room. The sound of sloshing water, soft jazz, Mia’s sharp shriek, and Julian standing up in the heart-shaped jacuzzi, naked, dripping wet, shouting at me to put the phone down.
Beatrice’s face drained of every drop of color. Natalie gasped, covering her mouth with both hands.
Richard stared at the screen, his jaw hanging open in utter disbelief.
"You see, Beatrice," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on my knees, "Julian thought he was having a quiet, romantic anniversary afternoon in the jacuzzi I bought him. But what he didn't realize... is that I recorded every second of it."
Beatrice recovered her composure with terrifying speed. She took a sharp breath, smoothed down her navy suit jacket, and stepped closer to the sofa, her face hardening into a cruel, ruthless mask.
"So you caught him with a maid," Beatrice spat out, shedding every ounce of her polite maternal facade. "Is that what this little drama is about? You called us out in a thunderstorm because your husband couldn't keep his eyes to himself? Grow up, Harper! Men in Julian’s position have affairs! You sign a non-disclosure agreement, you give the girl a hundred thousand dollars to vanish, and you keep your mouth shut like a dutiful wife!"
I looked at Beatrice, feeling a cold, dark satisfaction rise in my chest.
She had just walked straight into the snare.
"Is that how you handle corporate assets in the Caldwell family, Beatrice?" I asked softly. "You pay people off to keep things quiet?"
"We handle things by protecting our family!" Beatrice sneered, stepping closer, pointing a manicured finger at my face. "You have no children. You have no real standing in this company beyond your father’s dead legacy! If you think a little video of a bath is going to give you leverage over us, you are severely mistaken! We own Caldwell Global!"
May you like
"Do you?" I asked.
Before Beatrice could answer, the front double doors of the estate swung open once again.
