Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The news of Eleanor and Ryan Carter’s arrest shattered Chicago’s financial district like a megaton bomb.

By 7:00 AM the following morning, headlines dominated every major financial network and newspaper across the country:

CARTER INVESTMENTS CEO'S MOTHER AND BROTHER ARRESTED FOR MURDER AND FRAUD.

BILLION-DOLLAR FIRM IN CHAOS AS ETHAN CARTER UNCOVERS INSIDER POISONING PLOT.

Despite sleeping less than an hour, I arrived at the Carter Investments headquarters on Michigan Avenue at 8:30 AM sharp, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, carrying Leo in a sleek, secure travel harness against my chest. My personal security detail—four former elite military contractors—surrounded us as we made our way through the mob of news reporters and flashing cameras in the skyscraper lobby.

The board of directors had called an emergency assembly on the 50th floor.

When I entered the executive boardroom, the twenty board members were already seated around the massive marble table, arguing heatedly among themselves. Standing at the head of the table was Marcus Vance—the chief legal counsel of Carter Investments and the older brother of Dr. Harrison Vance, the disgraced doctor who had helped murder my wife.

Marcus was a smooth, silver-haired attorney in his late fifties who had managed our corporate legal affairs for fifteen years. He looked up as I entered, a expression of grave, professional sympathy plastered across his face.

"Ethan," Marcus said smoothly, stepping forward with his hands outstretched. "We are all deeply shaken by the tragic news regarding Olivia and the unfortunate situation with your family. But bringing your infant son to an emergency board meeting... surely this is a time for you to step back and focus on your grief."

"My son stays with me, Marcus," I said coldly, walking to the head of the table and sitting in the chairman’s leather chair. "And this meeting will take exactly fifteen minutes."

"Ethan, please be reasonable," Marcus continued, remaining standing, turning to face the rest of the board members. "The stock has plummeted thirty percent in pre-market trading. The SEC has launched an official inquiry into our liquidity reserves following the news of your brother's fraudulent Panama accounts. The company is facing an existential crisis."

"Which is precisely why I am here," I said, leaning back, tapping my fingers against the polished marble.

"The board feels differently," Marcus said, pulling a stack of legal documents from his leather briefcase and distributing them to the directors. "Under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws, if the Chief Executive Officer becomes involved in a severe personal conflict of interest or family criminal proceeding that threatens shareholder value, the board has the authority to vote for temporary suspension."

I looked around the table. Several older directors looked away, unable to meet my eyes, while others nodded in agreement with Marcus.

"And who do you propose takes over during my 'temporary suspension', Marcus?" I asked, a thin, dangerous smile playing at the corners of my lips.

"An independent, third-party management firm," Marcus announced proudly. "Apex Equity Consortium. They have offered to inject two hundred million dollars in immediate capital to stabilize our stock price, in exchange for forty percent voting control and temporary operational management."

Apex Equity Consortium.

The exact offshore entity mentioned by the scrambled voice on the phone last night.

The pieces connected instantly with horrifying clarity. Marcus Vance wasn't just representing the company; he was the mastermind behind the entire operation. He had used his brother, Dr. Harrison Vance, to administer the poison to Olivia. He had manipulated my greedy mother and brother into executing the sixty-million-dollar fraud, knowing that when I discovered it, it would destroy my family and create a corporate vacuum that Apex Equity could fill.

He had orchestrated the entire destruction of my personal life to steal my father's company.

"Apex Equity," I repeated softly, letting the name echo through the silent boardroom. "A fascinating proposal, Marcus. Tell me... does Apex Equity know that their primary shell bank in Zurich was seized by the Swiss Federal Audit Office three hours ago?"

Marcus froze. The stack of papers in his hand slipped slightly, rustling against the table. "What... what are you talking about?"

I tapped a button on my laptop. The massive projection screen at the end of the boardroom flickered to life, displaying live banking ledgers, wire transfers, and corporate registration documents stamped with official federal seizure seals.

"While you were busy preparing this coup last night, Marcus," I said, standing up, my voice reverberating off the glass walls, "I had my forensic intelligence team trace the funding sources of Apex Equity. It isn't a foreign consortium. It is a fraudulent entity owned entirely by you."

The board members gasped, several of them sitting up straight in shock.

"Fifteen years ago," I continued, pacing slowly behind Marcus, "you began creating dummy legal accounts within Carter Investments to siphon small amounts of capital. When Olivia caught Ryan stealing, she followed the trail further and realized that Ryan was just a small-time thief copying your blueprint. You realized she was going to expose you. So you used your brother Harrison to supply the synthetic heart toxin that killed my wife."

"This is slander!" Marcus shouted, his face turning bright red, his calm lawyer persona completely evaporating. "You have no proof! You are throwing wild accusations to save your failing position as CEO!"

"I don't make accusations without proof, Marcus," I said calmly.

I pressed another key on my laptop.

The speakers in the ceiling played a crystal-clear audio recording from last night—the scrambled phone call I had received. But this time, the audio had been processed through my firm’s acoustic de-scrambling software, stripping away the digital distortion.

Marcus Vance’s unmistakable, smooth voice rang out through the boardroom:

"I want Carter Investments, Ethan. You have seventy-two hours to resign... If you refuse, the evidence disappears..."

Marcus backed away from the table, his eyes wide with terror, staring at the speakers as if they were demon souls screaming at him.

"That's a fabrication!" Marcus whimpered, looking frantically around the table at the board members, who were now staring at him with pure disgust. "It's AI! He generated my voice!"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, accompanied by four Chicago police officers, stepped into the room.

"Marcus Vance," the lead federal agent announced, stepping forward with an arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, insider trading, and grand embezzlement."

As the officers slammed Marcus against the marble table and snapped handcuffs onto his wrists, I walked over to him, standing close enough to look into his defeated eyes.

"You took my wife, Marcus," I whispered, my voice cold enough to freeze blood. "I took your empire, your freedom, and your future. Enjoy the rest of your life in a federal cage."
