Chapter 3 - The Arrest and the Missing Link

Within six minutes, the quiet suburban avenue outside my estate was flooded with the flashing red and blue lights of eight police cruisers and two unmarked federal vehicles. The sharp wail of sirens cut through the evening air, shattering the peace of the neighborhood.

Deputy Chief Robert Miller entered the front doors himself, flanked by six armed tactical officers.

I met him at the bottom of the grand staircase, carrying Leo securely against my chest, wrapped in a warm blanket.

"Ethan," Miller said, his graying hair soaked with rain, his face heavy with grim determination as he shook my hand. "I am so deeply sorry for your loss. When you sent me that audio file five minutes ago... I couldn't believe it."

"The evidence is all secured on my server, Robert," I said, keeping my voice steady. "The microSD card contains the primary financial trail and Olivia's deathbed statement. The baby formula in the nursery needs to be tested for synthetic sedatives immediately."

"We brought our own forensics team," Miller assured me. "They're securing the house now."

Upstairs, chaos broke out as officers escorted Eleanor and Ryan down the stairs in handcuffs.

Ryan was sobbing openly, his hands pinned behind his back, his designer suit rumpled as he begged the officers to call his personal lawyer. "It was all Mom! She planned everything! I just signed the papers! You have to listen to me!"

"Shut up, you foolish boy!" Eleanor snapped at him, her voice ringing with icy fury despite the steel cuffs binding her wrists. She walked down the stairs with her head held high, refusing to look at the police officers on either side of her.

When she reached the landing where I stood holding Leo, she stopped. She looked down at her newborn grandson, then met my eyes.

"You've destroyed your father's legacy, Ethan," she said softly, her voice devoid of emotion. "You've dragged our name through the gutter for a dead girl."

"My father’s legacy died the day he left his estate in your hands, Eleanor," I replied cleanly. "And Olivia isn't just a dead girl. She is the reason you are going to die in a state penitentiary."

Miller waved his hand, and the officers led Eleanor and Ryan out the front doors into the pouring rain, shoving them into the back of separate patrol cars.

As the police cars drove away, their sirens fading into the distance, the forensic team began sealing off the house with yellow crime scene tape. Medical examiners arrived to carefully transfer Olivia’s body from the living room coffin to the state coroner’s van.

I stood by the front window, holding Leo, watching them load the vehicle. The pain I had held back for the last two hours hit me like a physical blow. The adrenaline that had fueled my cold, tactical response began to fade, leaving behind a hollow, agonizing void.

"Ethan?"

I turned to see Deputy Chief Miller standing beside me, holding a tablet computer.

"Our guys upstairs just finished a preliminary sweep of the master bedroom and the nursery," Miller said, his expression grim. "They found something you need to see."

He handed me the tablet. Displayed on the screen were photos of a small, hidden floor safe located in the back of my closet—a safe that only Olivia and I knew the combination to.

The door of the safe had been burned open with a portable plasma torch.

"It was emptied," Miller explained. "Probably late last night, before you landed. Do you know what was inside?"

My heart stopped.

That safe didn't contain money or jewelry. It contained Olivia’s private journals, her personal laptop, and a hard drive containing the complete backups of her investigative work regarding Carter Investments.

"Ryan and Eleanor didn't have the technical expertise to use a plasma torch on a military-grade safe," I said softly, my mind racing. "They had help."

"That's what we think," Miller agreed. "We checked the security cameras at the front gate. The footage from 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM last night was completely wiped from the cloud storage. Whoever opened that safe knew exactly how to erase their digital footprint."

I looked down at Leo, who opened his deep blue eyes, staring up at me peacefully.

Eleanor and Ryan were just the greedy, foolish faces of this operation. They had been manipulated by someone far smarter, far more dangerous—someone who wanted control of Carter Investments and was willing to murder my wife and frame my family to get it.

My phone rang in my pocket. It was an unknown, encrypted private number.

I answered, placing the phone to my ear without saying a word.

"Hello, Ethan," a deep, smooth voice spoke through the receiver. The voice was heavily altered through a voice scrambler, but the calm, arrogant tone was unmistakable. "Congratulations on arresting your mother and brother. A truly impressive performance."

"Who is this?" I asked, my voice dropping to an icy whisper as I signaled Miller to trace the call.

"I am the person who holds the rest of your wife's files," the voice replied smoothly. "Your mother was sloppy, Ethan. She thought poisoning Olivia’s tea was a clean solution. But she didn't realize that Olivia had already sent the second half of the financial evidence to me."

"What do you want?"

May you like

"I want Carter Investments," the voice said calmly. "You have seventy-two hours to resign as CEO and transfer majority voting control to the offshore equity consortium I represent. If you do, I will send you the master key that decrypts the files proving Dr. Vance poisoned your wife. If you refuse... the evidence disappears, Dr. Vance flees the country, and your mother's lawyers will pin the entire murder on you."

The line went dead.
